That looks pretty good Juan, but honestly I'm not super impressed with the spool of this turbo. We just did a street pull in the car you were comparing this to and here is the boost plot:

That's 20psi by 4000RPM and 25psi before 4300RPM and this is a GT35R with .82 housing with a FMIC. Of course this is a rotated setup, so its not a direct comparison. Oh and this is 4th gear in an 05 STI. The car did 475whp on our dyno (558whp Dynojet).

Thanks

I am confused in fourth gear STi I hit 27psi by 3960rpm... third gear 5 sp WRX it spools just like that STi. I think if I decide to lean it out and turn up the timing it should made about the same power as that car.

I am very happy with this stock location 68lb/min turbo... Do you have any FP reds that can compare?

Thanks Ed

Juan,

You hit that in 4th gear with the 07+ STI gearing. This is an 05 STI 4th which is similar to the 5MT 3rd where you're hitting full boost around 4500RPM.

Not trying to rain on your parade or anything here. You were just boasting about your spool and I noted that it was misleading because of the 07+ STI gearing.

I did an FP Red recently and was not impressed with the spool either.

Thanks

I think we should look at torque at 4000rpm for comparison. Torque is what makes a car feel good and fun.

This is my car on your road dyno, 5sp 3rd gear, FP black 68lb/min stock location.

EQ - 05 STI, EQ Built Block, GT35 Rotated, E85 - 473whp ...65lb/min rotated

EQ - FP Red on E85 - 456whp! 65lb/min stock location

As far as power goes I have no doubt that I will make around the same power if I raise the timing to 26*

Ok. Lets look at torque. The rotated 35r car hits 400ft-lbs by about 4700RPM and keeps going to 460ft-lbs while your car doesn't even hit 400ft-lbs. Also remember that you're comparing your road pull to my dyno pulls. On the road these cars spool a good 300-400RPM sooner than on the dyno in the same gear. I also highly doubt that you would hit the same power with more timing. Your system has significantly more back pressure which means you will hit MBT at a lower ignition advance. I could be wrong of course, but you can't just assume that you're going to pick up 50whp+ without trying it.

Again, I'm not knocking you or your tuning, just saying I'm not a big fan of the current FP turbos. Including the laggy FP red you posted that I tuned.

Thanks

Even if you shift the graphs to the left by 500rpm my car will still make more torque than those cars at 4000rpm. I have stock rods so I am keeping my torque down intentionally. If I wanted I could make this thing make tons of torque. You don't think I can make 30whp (compare to red) or 50whp (compared to the 35r) with a EWG and 5* of more timing?

Understand, I know we are not discussing tuning but we are discussing turbos and setups. This turbo is very good in IMO and I am very happy with it. I don't consider my setup laggy at all, I respect your opinion.

Juan, ED - speaking of stock location turbos: How do you think this compares to ATP's GTX3576r (65lb/min) and Blouch's DOM 5.0 (65lb/min)?

I think these are the competition to the FP Black HTA. Similar flow & price point

UPDATE

The car is still running strong no issues at all. It has been about 10 months since I installed the engine.

I lowered the timing at peak torque like Crystal suggested for safety of the stock 09 STi rods and increased the timing by one degree at redline. 12* at peak torque and 22.5* at redline 7500.

I lost some mid range but It gained about 10whp from 6000rpm to redline. The TMIC is getting head socked as you can see... second pull . I am still running fairly rich 10.9-11.3 AFR from 4000rpm to redline.

So, what should I do next? This is a 68lb/min turbo it should be capable of making quite a lot more power. What should give me the biggest gains?

Glad to hear its still running good! I'm surprised you haven't switched to a fmic yet, that should help quite a bit for power.

I want videos!!!

That video is with my 5-speed trans

I actually went to the 1/8th of the mile track a few weeks back and it wasn't pretty. Without launching, missing third really bad and hitting the rev limiter at the end, I still trapped 90mph

I'm running a built block on a dom 3 with meth and on my tmic I was making 375/350 and was knocking past 23. I added a txs fmic and was able to run 26.5 safely and made 415/405 so the switch was a major change in power for me

FMIC and EWG.

EDIT: I was pressed for time but wanted to get my words in, if only to revisit them later. The FMIC will allow you to run safer, repeatedly. If you're seeing the power drop on a pull, I'm willing to bet its from post intercooler IAT's. Fix that.

EWG is also just eliminating a bottleneck in the system. I know you ported your Green out, but an EWG skips it altogether. It does not get better than that.

All that said, you're still on thin ice with those rods and the above parts or deeper tuning will more than likely spell the end.

I don't see any knock at all right now. With my FP green I used to run 26* of timing daily and 30* on my race map without any knock. E85 is amazing, I just don't feel like pushing things but I want to make my setup more efficient.
