Default Audi Q7 sets off radar detectors

I figured the technology this truck has would set off radar detectors, & sure enough after passing 2 Audi Q7's on the highway it set off my escort. Their brake assist & cruise control uses Ka band radar. So far it hasn't been much of a problem, however in the future I can see alot of manufacturers using this technology forcing me to upgrade to a newer detector.
Just a heads up if you didnt know.

I get the same thing from a lot of Lexus models.

And Trailblazers/Envoys/whatever other models are the same damn thing, set off my laser detector with their brake lights.

The Lexus and BMW's have that option now, too... it will only get worse!

It really is a completely unneccesary luxury... even the salesman told me that when we were looking at options on our 328i... he said "Don't bother, you'll never use it"

You have to be pretty damn lazy to use that.

If these cars use Ka for brake assist, wouldn't that mean that all police radar guns that run on the Ka-band are obsolete??

adaptive cruise control is actually quite useful. once you get it, you won't won't to use the old school type. And it's not about being lazy...it's about safety.

It probably uses a different frequency on Ka band. I doubt it would jam/block a ka radar gun, more of a nuisance for the guy with a radar detector.

My lowly Impreza wagon has a factory standard feature where I can increase or decrease the set speed in the cruise control in 1 MPH steps by moving the cruise control lever up or down. If that is not enough it means that traffic is too crazy for cruise control.

i was reading that the mercedes benz system also sets off radar detectors, making it a nuisance for the benz owners because they cant use their radar detectors.

Those Infinity SUV's use laser that sets off my V1 all the time. Even in bumper to bumper traffic when cruise shouldn't be on.

Cruise control != having your car pay attention for you. Cruise control = having your car hold a steady speed for you.

I believe you are mis-informed...there are no lasers in use on any vehicles in the US at this time, and because of costs, I don't anticipate there will be. Your V1 alerts are coming from something else.

i don't know exactly what it is, but my V1's laser alert also goes off when the taillights of infiniti FX35/45s or trailblazers/envoys are around. i bet it's something about the frequencies that the taillight plastic material lets through.

Or possibly YOU are mis-informed?

Another feature, which we have seen on other high-end vehicles, was Laser Cruise Control. Like normal cruise control, the system allows you to set a speed and have the system maintain the set speed without holding your foot on the gas. The difference in a laser cruise system is that it is watching ahead and if it sees a car in your lane traveling slower than you, it will automatically slow you down and maintain a preset following distance, even applying the brakes if necessary to maintain a safe distance. If more than 30% braking is required to avoid hitting the car ahead, it is up to the driver to make that judgment and step on the brake pedal.
I almost bought an FX45, and learned all about the laser system from the dealer.
