Default Road tests of 2005 Forester/Legacy Turbos??

I'm looking into both of these as good year-round cars and wondered how fast they were in the 1/4. Both are 2.5l turbos with 250hp/250lbs-ft, right??

Most magazines have said the Forester XT is around 13.9-14.2 with the 5 speed. It is rated at 210 hp and 235 torque, but it seems to be underrated based on some dyno charts that are floating around.

No idea on the Legacy. My gut feeling from driving both is that the Legacy may be slightly slower in the 1/4, but I can't say for sure. The Legacy has a nicer interior though.

Both are quite nice cars.

I would say that the Legacy is probably a little slower in the quarter. I drove the Legacy GT and it didn't feel like a high 13 or low 14 second car. Of course when I tested it from a stop to 60 there were 4 people in the car, it was 100 degrees out and the AC was on so I am sure that it is alot faster than what I experienced. The Forester is pretty dang quick.

the engiens are only simmilar on the bottom end the legacy's turbo/intercooler/manafolds are very differnt

the td04 is small on 2.5L thats why the forster xt produces so little boost the legacy has the vf-40 which is still pretty new but noticably larger

the forester also has a 4.44 final drive ratio which will account for four things: high torque numbers on the dyno, snappy acceleration, lots of shifting, poor fuel economy

9 posts total, and 5 of them swear about your XT without actually saying why.

I have driven an 05 Forester XT and an 05Legacy GT. I did it back to back (same dealership). My wife was considering one of those to get rid of our gas guzzler Grand Cherokee (4.7 HO). Since it would have been her car she wanted an auto so we drove both autos. Forester is nice and I love the sunroof. Acceleration is nice but nothing exciting about it. I tried it with and without the AC and down low it felt quite torquey. The Legacy is much much nicer inside. fit and finish is better than the Forester. Also the interior has much nicer touches. The drive felt simmilar than the Forester but possibly a tad slower. Handling was better but that is expected between a Forester and a Legacy GT. Brakes were better on the Legacy but like day and night.

I have no idea if the manual vs the auto makes a day and night difference I am sure they are cosiderably faster. By the way the Legacy was quite a bit more expensive than the Forester and the dealer was telling us he would make us a deal for a 04 Forester for less than $24k. We did not go further so I have no idea if that would be a good price or a bad price. I looked at an 04 Forester and it seemed that the differences are mostly cosmetic (plus immobilizer that all 05's have).

All in all they are the perfect sleeper cars. Especially the Forester. I am sure the Legacy XT will be comparable to the Forester.
