JPM Coachworks | Shift Boot, E-Brake, Armrest install
Hey Forum,
Today I received a great shipment from JPM Coachworks! Since I couldn't easily find installation instructions I decided to do another write-up. Check out my full build thread if you are interested in more write-ups! Here is the link. Completed picture, write-up below! My other mods on my 2011 WRX Limited Hatch are below This is the 7th modification on my car as of 12/22/2011. First six are below. Mod 1 - Kartboy Short throw w/ Bushings install Mod 2 - IAG taillight kit install Mod 3 - Stance Coilover install Mod 4 - Satelite Radio install Mod 5 - Footwell Illumination install Mod 6 - Invidia DP & Exhaust Install | Video, Sound & Pics I always thought these three interior parts on the Subaru really come across looking cheap. Also, since I love Alcantara® I decided to go that route instead of leather. Please check my Short Throw install if you need to know how to take the center console apart... Here are the Pics... Stock shift boot in console. Underside of the boot and console. Shift boot removed from console. Stock boot removed from plastic ring. New boot ready to go on, the large tab on the bottom matches with the large cutout in the new boot. A little mark of a true craftsman.... New boot mounted on the plastic ring, ready to install back in console. Finished I used the stock ring inside to attach to the stock boot. I did not glue it in like the factory piece because I was able to snap it to the stock knob without a problem.

Time for the E-Brake Boot...
To remove the stock e-brake boot form the car, you need to un-snap the plastic ring by pulling up from the console. Do not try to pull out towards the drivers seat, it may break and that would suck... Also, you do not need to remove the stock e-brake handle, the stock boot slides over the handle and the new boot will slide back on. The handle is glued and needs to be heated or cut to remove. Here is the stock boot off the car. Stock boot removed from the plastic trim piece. Lots of glue to clean off!! I used mineral spirits and a solid hour of time to peferctly clean all the glue off... DO NOT TAKE SHORTCUTS.... MAKE SURE IT'S CLEAN!! CLEAN! Ready to glue. Remember to test fit to get an idea of where to glue and where to position the boot once it's glued. Come up with a game plan because once it's glued you will be surprised how difficult handling the boot is without getting it stuck to the wrong part of the trim piece. I taped off all of the areas the I didn't want glue, all the tabs and such... Time to glue! I used 3M #90... Home Depot, $12.99 Don't use anything lower in strength. Also, it has a very precise spray tip compared to the cheap crap. Spray the glue as evenly as possible to the plastic trim. Try to get it in every location that was covered from the factory. Time to glue the boot. I did cover the entire boot with painters blue tape to protect the material from glue on the outside. Nothing worse than having a spray across your new boot, you will be really pissed if you do... Try to get it as close to the factory as possible. Since the vinyl boot is so thin, you will find that it is a little tougher to get in those tight corners with the thicker material. |

Lastly I did the armrest cover...
I feel they did a great job making the cover so we can install it without sending it to them, but... I have a couple issues to talk about. One is that I was hoping to get the foam padding with the cover. It seems that they designed the cover to have padding but didn't supply it or give instruction or suggestions on what to use. Second, since I had no instructions I took a guess on what to do and felt I didn't make the best choices... I thought I wanted to glue the top of the cover, I still don't know if it's right or wrong but it's going to be tough to take off if you make a mistake or wear the material off. I also made the mistake of getting glue on the stitched seams inside. It wasn't a problem until I pressed down to secure the material to the top of the cover and the glue came through the seam to the outside, GRRRRRRR! Lastly, I still really want padding. I don't have any fabric stores near by so unless I took another guess on what to get and buy something online, I'm stuck with what I got from them, which was nothing. EDIT: I have to give a huge thank you to Alex at JPM Coachworks for reading this post and taking the highest customer service award for offering to re-cover my armrest with padding and to write new instructions for their customers to use! I sent my armrest to them and it came back flawless. I can't say enough, thank you!!!! Here is the stock cover. Remove the 6 screws, then once the inside cover comes off, you will see one more underneath that needs to be removed to get the top cover off... Once removed, glue the underside of the cover as shown and the inside 2" of the new material. Be sure to protect the outside of the material with blue tape and DO NOT GLUE NEAR THE STITCHING!! In the picture above, the orientation is upside down! The material says "FT" which is the front and it matches up with the plastic cover opposite as shown. The plastic cover is upside down in the picture! Sorry for the confusion... I lined up and centered the top first then did the same with the bottom. Worked my way from the center out towards the sides. Once I was happy with the stitch lines being straight, I tucked the the material around to the backside. Once the underside is all tucked in tight, you can re-install the cover back onto the console and sandwich the two pieces back together. Please use the new instructions in the PDF that is in the post below from JPM Coachworks! It's was completed using my actual armrest and possibly some of the instructions form this post, thank you Alex!! looks great and pretty much solidified my choice. STi has alcantara and textured black leather on the seat and wasn't sure which to match, but I definitely want the alcantara now after seeing your pics.
and I would certainly want padding. is there nothing you could have removed from the stock cover? I tend to lean on my elbow and have already cracked the plastic top. needs more cushion. |

wow awesome write up...i ordered mine the other day and they will be in tomorrow...been searching all day for a good write up or video on the install...thanks to you, i now have it...only item i did not buy was the console cover..i didnt see it on the website? i would of definitely ordered that with the shift boot and e brake boot...
disregard that..i ordered mine from rallysport, and they didnt have the arm rest...time to order that now...looks awesome man! |

Nice writeup. I had lots of fun installing the e-brake boot as well. I sprayed the Super 90 in a cup and pasted it on instead of risking overspray. I had leather which is a bit thicker and tougher to fit.
Worth noting that JPM will install these boots free of charge if you send the parts in. I had my console cover done by them, there was an extra cost for padding, but it has been worth it. I have the JDM console box though. I can't see how one could possibly get an elbow on the stock console lid, unless you run the seat way low? I've always thought it was funny Subaru doesn't have a standard equipment armrest, you have to pay extra for it. |

^Yeah, seat is all the way down and almost as far back as it goes. 6'4" so I need the room. Too bad the stupid rear-view mirror is right in my face.
What's this JDM console box you're referring to? The factory armrest extension? The only pics I've seen of that look like it makes the rear cupholder useless. |

Huh funny, I'm 6'2" we might be different shape I have a 36 inch inseam. Seat all the way back of course.
JDM console box is a little nicer than the SOA extender option, it is permanent and adds an upper level of storage. I keep my AP in there. Either armrest option doesn't stop the use of the rear cupholders. Confession: I actually own both console options, they can be installed together. JPM covered my extending console in leather with red stitching so I couldn't exactly get rid of it. I just use it in the down position with the JDM console. Every once in while on the freeway I pop the extender into "super extendo" mode, which is pretty sweet. |

This is the JDM Console box he is referring to. You keep the stock box and it adds a separate compartment on top. I have it and its probably my favorite thing Ive bought for my car. Looking to eventually cover it with one of JPMs leather wraps.

For the console lid, you also have the option of picking up a stock 2010+ STI lid, since that is now padded black leather with red stitching and reasonably priced, if you like that sort of thing. |

Thanks for the pic. You saying the stock lid will fit on top of the expansion? I dig that. My 05 armrest extension w/compartment used a different lid and I didn't like it as much.
