CNN Show: United Shades of America
Watched a couple episodes of this last night, not really sure how I feel about it by I like the premise.
The Klan one was mildly interesting but I wasn't a big fan of the next one pretty much celebrating undocumented immigrants... Quote:

Wish they had more show and less standup interludes. Had never heard of him until the show came out. He's not very good at standup. Still, fairly amusing/interesting show.

I watched this week's, on the Po-po, last night. I'm not going to say that his reporting is biased necessarily, but he certainly only tells his stories from one angle. The things that he's covering are complex, and the way he covers them is starting to turn me off because it feels too dumbed down even for a comedy news show, I feel like my intelligence is being insulted.

After the Portland show I think I'm out. Want to do a show on gentrification? Sure, valid topic. Want to do a show just on how gentrification disproportionately impacts people of color? OK then, needs talking about. It pissed me off a little though to paint Portland as the "whitest city in the U.S." (I'll admit that it is, but the lack of African Americans is more function of geography than systemic racism, so it was irritating for it to be construed as something different) and then in all of your interviews with "people of color" you don't talk to a single Latino or Asian American, both of which are larger communities than blacks there. Hell, didn't talk to any American Indians either.
This episode really exemplified what I was talking about them only telling a complex story from a single point of view, and this being a community that I grew up in and know a little about just made it that much more obvious to me. |

A lot of places had effed up laws 70 and 80 years ago, which brings up something else. As evidence of the current generation of blacks being forced from their homes they brought up a map from '38 outlining neighborhoods where loans weren't granted. They offered no other connection that I could see.

I watched 4 or 5 episodes so far... I liked the clan one (it was hyped up and met my expectations), the prison one was good, and the Alaska one was merely okay. The Portland and hispanic ones had a different tone for sure.
One thing that stood out to me when I caught 2 episodes back-to-back was that he has OCD and touches his glasses all the time. I can't look away and unless the next episode (Florida old people apparently) is excellent, I am done. I had heard of him before and caught a few seconds of his standup but he was on the Daily show or something a week before his first episode so I checked it out due to that interview. It is literally the first thing I have watched on CNN since September 12/2001. |

Yeah I used to watch Tony (until he got famous and predictable) but the Buenos Ares episode advertised during the show this thread is about has made me PVR Bourdains show this Sunday.... I watched an episode of Globetrekker (on pbs) last week and hadn't seen an episode of that for 5-10 years and feel like I have potentially missed some good TV there too.
