Hello all. I'm currently stationed in Baumholder Germany and I recently purchased a Japanese STi. Just wanted to say hi and see what this forum is all about! Any information about the car or where to find information on it would be lovely. I'll begin my search on here as well.

Ok, we need about a dozen more pics of that car. Inside, outside, engine bay, underneath. I don't care if you have to have your friends lift the damned thing while you crawl under it, we need pics!!!

Yeah, I'm jelly. Just want to drool on it for a while. Welcome to the forum. Any mods made to it you're aware of?

You guys realize it's basically the same car, right?? A few bits and pieces are different, but still, nice looking car.

What specific information are you looking for?

Awesome that you updated your profile. That's a great start.

Is it from Japan or from the UK. I spot the UK STi 4 pots on there. Don't know what they used in Japan at that point.

I would say they look like the Brembos that came equipped on the Japanese spec STi for 2001 model year...

Yea it has the Brembos from the factory. There were a couple of mods done (BOV, exhaust, tune) before I bought it. I just got a new set of racingbrake discs and I'm waiting on pads and a L/R wheel bearing to come in. I'm still up in the air if I want to dump alot of time and money into it knowing that I may not bring it back to the states when I leave here.

As for information, hell some sort of place to start researching parts and repairs would be great. I've started meeting a few people (three in my building) who drive US spec Scoobies. Also does anyone know how much/ complicated it is to bring a car like this back to the states? Thanks for the info.

I'm sitting at work about to go home so I'll take a few pics on the way out!

Very cool man. Hope you can figure out a way to get it over here cheaply. Since you're in the military, maybe make some friends in the air force or someone who is in charge of military flights involving equipment. You could sneak it back that way on us tax dollars instead of your own on an equipment flight.

Getting it back to the states is easy. Keeping it here is less easy. If the feds find it, they confiscate and crush it. There is presently no legal way to have it here.

I know nothing about this and am just curious so don't be defensive. I'm just curious why it would be crushed and for what reason. I have seen plenty of OEM GC RHD Subaru WRX's but never inquired how they obtained them or if it were legal to have them on the road. There was one up in Ocean City at the AWD meet. Is there a difference between the GCs and GD's as to why one would be legal to have here and one not?

It has to do with the age of the vehicle, not sure how it is exactly in the states, but in Canada, we can bring in any vehicle 15 years or older to the month, Always thought it was 20 years for the states, where the car could be brought in and registered as a classic.

Tons of Jdm gcs around my area, have seen some 97's already

Federal law says no to any Subaru imported privately.

I think you are all overlooking that he is "stationed" in Germany with the car. The law is different for bringing cars back when you are a soldier. My wife was in the army and broke it down to me once but I don't remember the details. When she gets home ill ask her again and see what the rules are.

Prescott....sorry.....I have responded so many times to this question and have received arguments so many times that I tend to come charging in on this issue.

Please look at a thread that I authored recently:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2482581

In short, the DOT and EPA have importing regulations in place. Cars that can be imported outside normal channels need to be brought in by a Registered Importer (if they are not at least 25 years old). That Importer must have submitted modifications and crash test data and can only bring in the specific model and year that they crashed. Because it's so costly, these importers share nothing with anyone else.

The states don't care and have nothing to do with this. That's why you see people saying they registered a Skyline in Florida or Alabama. I can go into the DMV with a made up VIN and a hand written bill of sale and register anything I want. That gets me the title. Then I take that title and go to a "real" state and get a title there. That's actually a route that thieves take to "wash" a title from a stolen car or one that's been salvaged, totalled or otherwise deemed unworthy to go on the road.

How the car gets here does not matter. The feds do go looking for them. If they find it, you can strip the parts and use those. THe chassis has to be surrendered and it will be crushed. A common way to get one of these cars is to get one at police auction. If it's a high profile car like a Skyline, the feds will present you....on the spot with notice that you have 30 days to get the car out of the US. (I know someone who did that). If you turn around at the border and come right back in from Mexico, the border patrol have bigger fish to fry than someone bringing in an illegal car. If you don't have drugs or illegals with you, you come back in.

Look at the builds. I know of one in NH being done with a USDM chassis and a JDM RSTi that was cut in half. He has it for sale in the NESIC classifieds. Nothing illegal there. He imported for parts and will be scrapping the JDM chassis when he's done.

If you can get your STi back in one piece, line up a clean, straight USDM car and swap everything. Look at other builds for guidance.
