Model year: 2008
Build date: No Idea
Purchase date: July 08
Failure date: August 08
Mileage at failure: 1800
ECU recall performed? yes
Was car modified? (If so, list mods) No

Want to add that although the loss of a brand new engine was a bummer the dealer I went to handled this very well. Better then expected and I expected a lot.

Maybe subaru needs to hire someone to tell them how to turbo modern engines. If Dodge can do it with the SRT-4, and GM with the Cobalt SS, you'd think Subaru could get this right.

I was just reading about Porsche Boxsters. Apparently, they're getting an estimated 20% failure rate on Boxster engines.

Default 2008 ring land failure -- new addition

picked up a 2008 sti new at thanksgiving (as part of the $6500 off offer). engine failed on december 10 with less than 2000 miles. break in was done correctly (afaik, as the car had 200 miles on it at the dealer), no mods, no track. #4 cylinder is affected. the reflash apparently HAD NOT been performed.

SOA is going to repair the affected cylinder (not replace the engine). i am concerned as two dealers have told me they should replace the engine.

i am looking for input as to what i can expect. sounds like it will fail again after repair looking at this forum. i'd appreciate any help/advice as i am completely new here and to the sti (coming from an m3). i've asked SOA to replace the engine and they've refused. thanks.

talk to the regional manager and demand that they replace the ENTIRE engine under warrenty sighting the two other dealerships' recomendations or just take it to one of the other two.

it's SOA's call, not the dealer's. Perhaps while the motor is pulled, he could get the dealer to replace all four at the same time (at his cost....which would be my choice if I was in that situation). Then, I'd fight with SOA for the cost.

Better yet, just hand the mechanic a set of forged pistons and new rings under the table and pocket the OEM replacements - then sell 'em on E-Bay. What's $500 for a little piece of mind? You sure as hell won't be back in for another piston failure, plus you can then mod the car to your heart's content. That's a lot of free labor there, boys.

You poor bastard!

Just about rolled over 3,000 miles on the STI today (and though the build date was 02/08 I didn't buy it until November), so things are looking good ... so far.

Asking again. Did any of you guys with EM or TBE get warranty hassles, or is SOA just fixing them because they know there is a problem?

if you take your car with an AP and TBE installed, you're not doing yourself any favors.

I understand that, but the question is to the guys that had ring failure and had mods. Did they cover it or give you a problem?

How does Subaru know if you reved it to the rev limiter? Did they start recording when you hit the rev limiter on the ECU like Porsche does in order to deny warranty work?

rev limiter and fuel cut are separate things. It would be hard to believe a manufacturer that includes a user programmable shift light on their car would deny warranty.

i thought the casting process was different for the 07+ STI's than the previous model year STI's.

I have 12,000 miles on my 08 STI purchased in June of 08. It is 100% stock and I have been looking at doing some tuning but every time I drive it hard it pings even on 93 octane. So I don't tune it and continue to drive it like a toyota. I purchased it as a track day car but it is easy to tell after spending some time with it the engine is fragle. Think I will pass on oem fixes and build the short block before any tuning or track time.

Bought my STi last week with 700miles on it..been sitting at dealer for a long time. Ended up going to another dealer in KC for oilchange, and it came up as being affected. That dealer did the reflash, hope nothing during first 700miles has caused damage. Kinda pissed that dealer where I bought didnt do the reflash while car was still there.

Mine #4 went on Sunday at it's first autocross with 3500 miles. Car had 90 miles when purchased, had reflash before picking up, was a stop sale car and supposedly checked out fine. I got a conservative STU tune, everything else stock, at 1000 miles. Car started running rough and smoking on drive home Sunday, initially diagnosed as a stuck PCV. After PCV replaced, CELs lit up and compression test showed #4 to be toast. Dealer is replacing engine. PCV valve may have caused the detonation that killed mine.

Has Subaru fiqured out why these are dying. Many speculate it's the tune, different metallurgy in the pistons, the fuel injectors, improper ring gaps from the factory. I don't understand, my 02 WRX and 05 STi were very robust and I abused the hell out of them without a single failure. Why are the 07-09 so prone to failure?
