Well even after reading about it, I don't understand how it effects air flow. I could see with accoustics or something like a subwoofer box or instrument. Also, Verocious built that?

Yes, that was built at Verocious almost 2 years ago now. Cant really help you on the resonance vs flow topic though.

Keep in mind that the intake valves are only open for about a quarter of the time, so the air in the runners is rushing at them and bouncing off of them frequently. The merit of the flat wall idea still isn't all that clear to me though, as that wave is still going to bounce off something in the plenum regardless (other than the portion that tries to go 'upstream' toward the throttle body).

Picture the pressure wave that results when the valve shuts and the moving air hits it. The wave will revert back up the runner. If you have a manifold with no "wall" the wave will simply travel up the manifold an serve no purpose (Example: the stock manifold...). Now imagine if there was a "wall" of some sort, like in my photo. The pressure wave will revert back up the runner into the plenum, hit the wall, and bounce back. The pressure wave will then head back down the runner towards the valve again. Now picture the valve opening the exact moment the pressure wave reaches it. The motor is able to ingest thaaaat much more air on that intake stroke.

The key is that it will only work in a certain RPM window based on the runner length.*** I don't know the specifics, but there is a pile of math involved.

Go take a look at some high-rpm oriented manifolds, such as those for an EVO, Honda, or sportbike. They will all have short runners with some sort of face (wall) opposite the intake runner trumpet. I'd like to see something like this for a Subaru.

***(It can also happen on different "orders." The wave can bounce off the closed valve, wall, and then the (still) closed valve again, then wall again, before being ingested as the valve opens on the waves 2nd hit)

EXAMPLES:

B-Series manifold optimized for 7000-10,000 rpm.

Power up to 9500rpm range

The most baller of them all: The Mazda R26B manifold. It has variable length intake runners so that instead of a single perfect tuned runner length, it can shorten the runner as RPMs increase and "follow" the perfect runner length for maximum effect at all RPM.

I hope this makes sense. I'm falling asleep as I type...

Its harder to do that for a subaru manifold as we are limited to a min/max size restriction with the 2 heads X inches apart. Unless you do dual tb's.

not custom and not for a subaru, but i like showing it off.

driven innovations large plenum manifold for my evo.

btw, motor is about 136 ci and the intake plenum volume is about 300 ci. it *should* work quite good.

I'm glad you feel that way because we are all entitled to our own opinions. I personal think yours is one of the worst designs in here. But that is just my opinion. To me it doesn't flow and it's over crowded. Simply put I think it looks crowed and has poor flow characteristics.

Suby drew's is much nicer then yours and I wouldn't even put them in the same catogory. His incorporates some very nice aspects and is well thought out. I personaly don't like how the back of his main plenum is flat and would cause turbulance making the abrupt 90* turns to either side but the volocity stacks in the secondary plenum's is a very nice touch.

i see all you boosted guys making intake manifolds, would there be any benefit to designing one for my 2.5 N/A?

VQ30? In my BMW? It's more likely than you think.

Since we are on the topic of manifolds.

Has anyone noticed that the SVX makes really good power being NA with the same basic setup as a ej22. Now the heads are more like what is in a turbo head but the only real difference in is the intake manifold.

It has the dual TB and a butterfly valve that opens at high rpm joining both sides of the plenums together.

Do anyone have something like that made?
