I'll make this as short and sweet as possible.
BACKGROUND
I drive an '04 WRX that will be paid off in January. I had planned on holding onto it for a long time and enjoying no car payment.
Wife drives a leased G35x; lease ends in December.
We have an infant, and expect to have another within 2-3 years.
ISSUE
We need to get a new car in December for my wife. We have a fundamental disagreement on how to go about it. If I had my way, she'd get something that would fit our needs for many years to come (i.e., a minivan), I would keep my WRX, and we would enjoy only 1 car payment for several years to come.
She doesn't want to get a minivan yet (apparently it's too "mommyish" for a 32 year old woman with a kid), and thinks we should get her a sedan which she would use for a couple years (until we have a 2nd kid), and then pass it along to me, at which point I would get rid of the WRX and she would get a minivan. Her reasoning is that we need enough hauling power to move around 4 adults, 2 kids, and cargo; in the event that we get a sedan/small SUV, that only provides enough room for 2 adults and 2 kids + cargo, and that my WRX isn't comfortable/accomodating enough for the remaining adults. You know, in case we're cheuferring around out of town famility or friends.
SOLUTION
Rather than trying to reason or use logic with a woman, I'm going to try to find a vehicle that the wife could get in December, that she would enjoy driving now, but would suit our needs for many years. And this is where you come in.
Recommend a vehicle that...
• would provide room for at least 3 adults + 2 kids (in car seats) plus cargo.
• is safe
• is "sexier" than a typical minivan
• is reasonable economical--no large SUVs (Expedition or larger) will be considered
When providing ideas, rationale for your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
