Exclamation Planning another trip to Rally Knight in Upland this weekend

Got to continue wrenching on the RS donor. Also get to see the prototype autobox that they've been working on that reverses the factory torque split, and turns the car into a 4 speed manual.

Now, just need to find out what the hell happened on Saturday. On Friday, Lon came in second behind Rhys Millen and his megabuck EVO VI, and Jon came in 5th. Saturday, they bothed DNF'ed on one stage, and DNS'ed at least one stage. I haven't been able to find any info about what went on, and no one was answering their phones today.

Cool

Lon's 5 speed exploded at the beginning of the first stage on saturday and Jon's Turbo blew in transit to the first stage... They were the only competition to the Rhys Millen car and so he took the whole ball of wax by over 10 minutes.

Rally Knight will NOT be doing any more 5 speeds cuz they cannot take their 500 lbs of torque, but the autobox CAN. It seems to be able to take anything...Go 4EAT

Yeah, Ravent, I talked to Jon and Bill today... That TOTALLY sucked major donkey-you-know-what....

Actually, Lon *BEAT* Millen in the first leg on Friday, which as Bill explained it to me, was a CRS race unto itself, so in essence, the Ramada Rally was 3 California Rally Series races in one weekend.

Anyway, I have been talking with Paul Guard, and he may be the savior for them since he can make a torque biasing differential from the 4EAT open diff. I'm seriously considering going with the 4EAT myself, given all the manual trans failures the turbo people have been experiencing.

And another update for those who are planning on tagging along. I will be heading up to the shop on Saturday the 30th. So if you want to meet there, mark your calendars now.

I didn't know someone was trying to make a 4EAT into a 4MT. Cool. Please keep me posted. I'd like to tag along too, but we'll have to see about my schedule.

Heheh. not only make a 4EAT into a 4MT, but a 4MT with 10/90 f/r torque biasing, and a "dial-a-torque" knob to go from 10/90 to 50/50 at will. And, eventually, nifty Ferrari F355 F1-esque paddles to shift with.

Seriously, I know many people have had good luck on turbo'd street cars with manual trannies, but all this ***** going on with MRT *AND* BPM gearsets has made me really think about it.

I can get a turbocharged engine that bumps out 400+ lb/ft and HP, and will mulch even the vaunted MRT gearsets at will. True, I am highly unlikely to ever subject them to the stress that a rally car can generate, but the bad experiences they've been having with these manuals has at least opened my mind to the point that I'd consider an autobox as a serious option.

Okay! I just talked to Bill Gutzmann, and he's going to be at the shop pretty much all weekend. Soooooo, I'm planning on heading up Friday (Tomorrow) since I have half a day off work, and may want to stop at some of the shops up there to check prices on TV's and such.

But, I will also be going up there Sat, Sun and Monday, since Bill will be there working on the rally cars. If someone can come up on Friday from SD, that'd be great, since if I can get a ride back to my place, I can leave the Impreza up there and hopefully get the conversion done over the weekend, or at least get a REAL big jump on it.

The rally cars are both 4EAT equipped now, and will be there until Tuesday, so if you want a good look at the trans mechanism and what not, now'd be a good time to see them. They have no problem with people coming up to check out the goods, as Jon said "the more the merrier".

If anyone's up, please email me at [email protected] directly, so I can get an idea of who's coming.

NOTE: I tried to post this at about 3:30PM PST, but the board took a dump before I could post it. Sorry for the short notice.

ivbdn, everyone, the shop is on Loma Place in Upland.

To get there:

Take your favorite route to the 10 freeway.
If you're coming from LA, you want to head east on 10, if you're coming from SB or San Diego, you'll go west on the 10.

Take the 10 to the Central Avenue exit
Take Central Avenue going north (going east on the 10, that's a left, going west on the 10, it's a right)
Go up Central Avenue past 9th Street, and take a right on the next street. (it's the 2nd Arrow Hiway, and it's also called by another name that escapes me)
Loma Place is the first street on the left. The shop is about the 3rd or 4th driveway on the right. Just look for a couple of Impreza rally cars in the parking lot!

I went but couldn't find the place. I might try and go again tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll see you there. I'll probably be going at about 3. Are you going tomorrow? What time?

Well, ivbdn, it looks like Bill's wife misses him dearly, and has plans for him other than spending them at the shop on New Year's eve and for New Year's day.

I will be meeting him in Temecula early Tuesday to give him my car and get a ride back to San Diego, and he'll take it back up and put the RS drivetrain in it.
