Default New 04 wrx. Knocking noise? :(....

My first Subaru! It's a 2004 WRX with 120k. AUTOMATIC transmission ( I like autos) Bought it last night! Was very happy with it until today.

It runs great, no problems. The previous owner had done the transmission flush about 2 months ago. But was due for an oil change. I changed it myself today using Mobil 1 high mileage 5w30 . Then a couple hours later, I went for a short drive maybe half a mile.
I noticed a slight knocking noise. I really doubt it was doing this when I bought it but I'm not 100% sure. It's NOT very loud. After noticing it, I turned the car on and off several times and it kept doing it. One time it didn't make the noise right away but when I revved to 1k-2k rpm I heard it. The "knocking" will increase in speed when I rev in neutral. It's worrying me and I'm getting very frustrated I don't want to drive it until I know what's wrong with it and hopefully I can afford the fix. Has a engine light but it's for an o2 sensor.

Can someone help? I'm not very good with cars but I like trying. ....Haha

Take a video. It's probably just noisy injectors or piston slap. I recommend you use Rotella T6 5w40 as well. It'll quiet up the engine a little.

+1 to Rotella T6. There's numerous stories about M1 oil, but let's not dwell into that, just google it if you want to. Your location? Try bringing it into a local reputable shop that people mention on here.

Thank you for replies.

I will definitely take a video tomorrow and post it here. I have no clue what's going on.

And I really can't afford to take it anywhere at the moment. Just hoping it's something small :/

I will look into rotella

Keep in mind that rotella is synthetic and not conventional.

If you want to stay with conventional castrol gtx 5w40 would be good.
I run 10w40 in my built motor but thats a different story.

You can hear the noise when I give it gas.... Then for the most part it goes away at idle.

This was the first vid I took. It sat over night so idles high. I don't have to give it gas to hear the noise on this clip. Very noticeable especially when I put the phone by wheel well.

To me it does sound like piston slap, which would be okay for first startup on a cold morning after sitting but once warmed up it shouldn't sound as loud. I would try the Rotella T6 and see if it helps, you could also throw in some Slick50 for the higher mileage and to help thicken up the oil a little and quiet down the motor.

Thanks for reply. I live in florida so it actually wasn't cold at all outside when I took this video. And once earned up it still makes the noise as you can hear in the video. I just changed the oil, I should change again?

As stated before I recommend rotella t6 5-40 as well. Also id run a bottle of the lucas heavyduty oil stabilizer to 4 quarts of the rotella. That's what I run in my 02 and my 11.

It's normal on higher mileage cars. Anyone have the link to the video of the tech explaining it?

So my best bet is 4 quarts of 5w-40 rotella t6, plus Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer. This would quiet it down?
