Default Maguire Subaru in Ithaca NY

Maguire used to be Bill Cooke, who apparently sold out in more ways than one.

First, I've had generally excellent experiences with the service department here. The level of quality assurance is very good, and they have experienced techs who are well trained.

The sales department is another matter.

While I was waiting for an oil change, I walked through the sales area and got solicited by a young salesman just starting out apparently. He showed me a 2008 WRX with 8k miles on the lot. No special options, just a vanilla 08 WRX. No price posted on it either. I asked him if he could give me a quote.

A few minutes later, he came back with a quote. In writing, it said that the car sold for $34,500 new and they would let it go to me for $27k. I almost fell over. I said "are you trying to claim that this car sold for over $34k new? You don't mean $24k do you?" He said yes, according to his sales manager. I asked to be taken to see his sales manager and we went to his office.

To the sales manager I said "are you saying that this is the price of the new 08 WRX?" He said "oh yes". I said "you know this isn't an STI, don't you?" He said "oh yes" and then added "I've been selling these for years...I know what I'm talking about."

Of course I walked out. I'm still stunned. Trying to pawn off a used 08 for way way over MSRP and pretending that they're selling me a $35,000 car that cost maybe $25,000? How did they think I was going to fall for that and how did they think I was going to let them get away with it?

Needless to say, I'm never going to buy from them again.

Welcome to Central NY. The only great dealer experience I have had around here is at Matthews in Binghamton, but then again I wasn't trying to buy a car.

Romano and Rapp in syracuse are nothing to be proud of either

I went to school in Ithaca. If you look around, you'll see that everyone in town drives Outbacks and Foresters. The salespeople probably don't even know what an STI is.

plus 90% of the kids that go to school there are rich brats from the city - they've got stupid money and will pay whatever somebody asks without even thinking twice

I would've guessed that even the sales dept. at a Subie dealership would be a bit more granola.
I had a good experience with Benedict in Norwich. Bought my 02 wrx there brand new in the summer of 03 for a tad over $20k. Moved away shortly thereafter so no experience with service dept.

This is not a Subaru dealer, but I bought a mint 2000 Impreza Wagon from Ridge Road Imports in Ithaca (Lansing) and they were awesome.

They usually sell late model subarus (though I just looked on their website and they don't have anything at the moment. Anyway, really fair - low price, and they had a great mechanic.

Bill Cooke had the cleanest looking service bays I've ever seen. Idk, that counts for me.

I don't want to pull into a Suby Dealer and have the service dept look like Cooters out on Highway K.

I had a really bad experiance with my 09 WRX Sedan at Macguire. Here's the story.

I took it in for the first oil change at 4000mi exactly. It took about an hour so i waited and drove it off the lot. About 200 miles later i opened the hood to admire the beauty underneath and there was no oil cap on my car???? I checked the oil and had about 3/4 full so i drove it in... Not only did they take 2 1/2 hours to fix the problem... add a quart of oil, replace the cap, and clean the disaster of oil all over the engine compartment but they handed me my keys back with no explanation. I went and checked under the hood and they had given me a "used oil cap". When returning inside they said the oil cap was "replaced". After demanding a new one they said there were none in stock and it would have to be ordered for me. Who knows where they got the "replacement cap" from (another customers car maybe???) They seem to not give a crap about customers cars. I spent a lot of money here and they dont seem to have any respect for the customer or the car. Sorry but clean service bays dont make up for stupidity when working on my car.

I was shopping for a WRX at Bill Rapp here in Syracuse, basically they were going to give me a base model 2009 wrx for about 27k in April. I could not get them to budge on the price a bit. They also had an black 09 Sti, which was priced at 40kbbs and navi I guess make it a 40k car... Needless to say I didn't buy the car from them. I have searched all the dealer in the area including Maguire for an Sti and couldn't seem to find one for under 37k. I bought a civic si, last April for 18,300 and I'm happy with it, not to mention price was right.

I just purchased a '15 STI from Benedict Subaru in Norwich NY (Saleswoman was Jamie Vosburgh). The sale was fantastic, the prices were as low as the lowest prices I was quoted. (The STI's were not available anywhere else within 120 miles of Syracuse....closest ones were Buffalo (2), Boston area(!) and Vermont (many))

Benedict quoted me a very low price via email, on a Launch Edition, no less. I explained I was coming from over an hour away, and wanted to get in and out quickly, they promised to keep me there less than 1 hour (and did better than that).

I wish I lived closer, to take advantage of lifetime free annual state vehicle inspection and my first oil change, but I can easily recommend that dealership to anyone willing to make the drive.

Another great CNY/WNY dealership is Van Bortel in the Rochester suburbs. I had a fantastic experience there trading in my 2007 WRX wagon and purchasing a 2014 WRX hatch. Very fair trade in price and very fair purchase price. No haggling necessary, and I did most of the deal with salesman Karl L. over Facebook messenger and email. And spent 35 mins at the actually dealership.

Default Maguire Subaru in Ithaca NY

Purchased my 15' STi Limited from Maguire. Apparently it was the 2nd STi that they sold this year. 1st one ordered. They had a 15' STi LE. Ordered it on 4/28, picked up on 8/10. Took forever, but they were very accommodating to me asking "where's my car." Most likely because I purchased the most expensive car they will sell this year. They treated me well and gave me a deal under MSRP and threw in some accessories beyond the STi STS I ordered.

They did lowball me on my trade (Stock 10' WRX premium sedan ~50k miles), $14,500. They had a '11 WRX on the lot for $22k at the time with 60k miles. Sold it on my own for a ton more. They weren't happy I sold it on my own, but money talks.

They don't really know much about the STi. Ithaca is the land of Prius' and foresters/outbacks. One sales man however has a very modded WRX and is very knowledgable.

Overall great experience, went back to them because they really helped my out with my 10' WRX. Bought it used at Ramano, clutch went after 5,000 miles along with 3rd gear. Maguire replaced the clutch and transmission under warrantee. They really fought with SOA for me to get the work under warrantee. They even installed a STi pitch stop mount, transmission mount, and engine mounts free for having my car for two weeks.

Ramano on the other hand. Would not do a thing to help me (long story). Never going there again. Treated me like a no body, especially after the deal was done, would not work we me at all. Had to call the Better Business Bureau and SOA. Basically, sold me a "Subaru Certified Used Car " with a burnt up clutch, 3rd gear dying, and dry rotted tires. They did however put new tires on for me. Not sure what they mean by "certified" but SOA was not pleased with them and after they talked to Ramano that's when they backpedalled and gave me tires. BTW, I know I should have inspected the car better before I signed, but it was my wife's car and she did the test drive and I showed up to late to buy it.
