Default Subaru for the Tech school bound.

My son JUST had to have a Subara Impreza to join his friends who all have them too. After a few weeks of looking we found a Red 2006 Impreza wagon auto with 81k miles on it.

We figured he needed something relatively reliable due to him being accepted and starting in the Fall to Universal Technical Institute in Exton, PA.

Just saying hi and hope the forum helps with any issues - WHICH is has already!

BTW: It didn't take much convincing for me to switch to a Subaru for MY next vehicle!

UTI is a decent school. I graduated from the Avondale, AZ campus back in 2006 with a degree in auto/diesel technology. You get out of that school what you put in. People get upset that the instructors are not there holding your hand every step of the way, but more so give you the tools to learn in your own way. Lab work is a perfect example of that. It is just not feasible for 1 instructor to be at 25+ lab stations at one time. Attendance is key there (you actually get rewarded and recognized for good attendance records). Am I still a tech? No, I have taken a different career path after being in the industry long enough during a time of auto manufacturer depression so to speak, but I do value my skills acquired at the Institute and they still serve me on a daily basis on personal vehicles. Subaru's VERY MUCH included.

Well, we're back again...

We've replaced the canister and all pertinent solenoids to this 2006 Impreza NA, and we've replaced the filler neck and shutoff valve and we STILL cannot fill the tank properly. Not sure about the CEL yet as we need a drive cycle but I'm expecting it to come back on due to not being able to fill it up the correct way.

The filler neck came with new hard lines so those were replaced as well.

Is there any way to get at the other end of the smaller neck lines to disconnect them and blow air through them JUST to make sure there isn't a blockage somewhere?

Otherwise we're at a loss.

ANY help or insight is GREATLY appreciated.

Best of luck to your son in the industry, I graduated automotive training center in exton, pa in early 2004 and have remained in the industry to this day which along the way afforded me the opportunity to own my own garage which is my dream come true. As for the tank filling issues, was there originally a CEL that came up when the issue started? I haven't personally ran into any issues with filling the tank on an Impreza but imagine someone else around here may have.

I believe, if my memory is still good, it was a P0457...Gas cap loose. That was our 1st fix that didn't work.

When the cap didn't fix the problem I came here and searched/posted and found that the canister and purge solenoid(s) needed replaced. Did all that and the filler neck and the issue is still here.

Did you replace the gas cap with an aftermarket one from a auto parts store or is it an original OEM cap?

I've had issues with non OEM caps causing evap codes on previous vehicles.


As for the lines going to your tank. I think you would be looking at dropping the tank to be able to access all of the lines on top... You might be able to poke around the charcoal canister lines and see if anything is clogged.

I had a fuel tank spring a leak on me once because of the chemicals dropped during the winter literally had eaten the metal on top of the tank... It was a PITA of a job. Hopefully you wont need to do any of that.

The replacement cap was from Autozone.

I have read (I believe it was on here) that some people have used compressed air to blow some of these lines clear. I was hoping maybe we could try this but if we have to drop the tank I don't think it's going to happen. My son leaves for school in less than 2 weeks and we are booked up during this time with other things.

Are ANY of these line accessible from the rear seat access panel for the fuel pump?

I had a similar issue with my 2002 WRX wagon with the intermittent fueling. No CELs for me, and it turned out to be a $22 vent valve that was clogged at the charcoal canister. It was an easy DIY fix. I think I picked up the vent valve from my local Subaru dealer.

I found out that it was the vent by temporarily removing the outlet hose from the fuel vapor evaporator/charcoal canister that was under the rear bumper on the same side of the gas tank - if the gas fills smoothly and properly stops when full, that's the issue. I think it would be the same side on your car. Hope this helps.

Any time a tank wont fill properly it has to do with it properly venting, so a partially stuck vent valve could cause both a small leak by the gas cap region causing that code while also not opening enough to vent pressure as the tank is filled. Sometimes the vent tube could be clogged, often by spiderwebs, causing similar problems. I know on some vehicles, not necessarily Subaru, I have had the check valve in the tank itself cause this issue, or the other extreme where it never clicks off and causes fuel to come rushing out. I don't jump to conclusions without testing first but the vent valve is a place to check, when not powered on it should flow freely through, with 12v and ground applied it should be completely sealed on a typical car.

Since we don't know yet if the CEL will be back on (we need a drive cycle) then IF it doesn't come back on this points to the vent valve. I hope to GOD it doesn't come on..
