2023 Honda Civic Type R TCR revealed, even wider than road car

Just like the last generation, the introduction of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R means that there's a new TCR-class race car based on the same hot hatchback. It has just been revealed, and it looks mighty mean. Honda claims it performs even better than before, too.

Despite that claim, Honda didn't reveal many specifics. It mostly just noted that it should produce more downforce, and that its new chassis offers better handling. Under the hood is a race-prepped version of the Type R's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder coupled with a racing transmission. Based on the old TCR, power output is probably around 340 horsepower, give or take a few depending on tune.

As with the old model, the Type R TCR will be built and developed by JAS Performance in Italy (yep, they're Italian race cars). In the U.S., they'll be available through HPD. A variety of options are available such as driver cooling, a rapid refueling system, fancier driver information display, ABS and more lighting.

Pricing hasn't been announced yet. The old car was around $170,000 with no options. HPD will open ordering on February 1, and the race debut for the car will be in April in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.

I had some thoughts about these cars but can't remember them.

I never thought I'd fall out of love with the Type R like I have, but thank God I did. Poor ssvagegeese guy though, he really must have been bitten to be so desperate. Kinda gross. He should have gotten on a list and waited to pay a reasonable ADM instead of throw a big chunk of dignity away like that. Sad to see.

Yeah I know he got it for MSRP, I watched as much of the video as I could. That dealer isn’t just a markup dealer, they’re the worst kind of markup dealer, basically go looking for the highest bidder. Was painful to watch the owner talk about that like it’s doing any of their customers any favor. Donate the proceeds to veterans surely a car dealer wouldn’t lie about that.

Meanwhile it comes out that Mark got MSRP as a favor “for all his channel does for the brand” etc or some such thing. Basically they gave him a $15-$25k discount (what the markup would have been) for making a video shilling for their dealership. Hard to see it any other way, can’t IMAGINE he would have made that video unless he was somehow obligated.

I found that to be pretty disgusting as well. But at least Mark admits the realities of the business, one favor for another.

And out of all the car Youtubers to get preferential treatment, Savagegeese is one of the most deserving IMO. They consistently put out extremely high-quality content that really gets into the weeds of the engineering and design aspects of cars, which is something that most other channels don't have and/or aren't capable of producing. I sure as hell would rather see them get their back scratched vs. someone like TJ Hunt or any other flatbill wearing vape bro

Being mad at Savagegeese for getting one for MSRP is like being mad at someone who bought a car below MSRP before the pandemic... Or like being mad at me for still getting employee discount on parts from the dealer I used to work at 10 years ago... Or a senior citizen using a senior citizen discount... Or someone in the military getting preferential treatment for job placement...

There is literally no legit reason to be mad about it. Just makes the people that are mad look like petty jealous fools.

and what SG did was completely understandable too.

I'm sure he'll take a hit in subscribers, but probably not enough to make a difference.

I think he could have created more followers though had he followed the regular paths for buying a car, and worked with someone like YAA to do some actual consumer buying advice as he tracked through the process of buying a highly coveted ADM vehicle, and that would have netted him more in the long run than the ADM would have cost him.

I figured my original comments could be received like this, but it's not that at all. I honestly do not care what other people pay for cars - high or low. Even if I did feel salty I wouldn't say anything because I'm SO FREAKING SICK of hearing about it, every single comment in every reddit/youtube thing about CTR, GRC.

I guess my problem is that it was embarrassing to watch. Why even make that video? I can't think of any good reasons. And like I mentioned if he was actually obligated to make it as a shill for the dealer (what tin-foil hat version of me can't un-see) then I'm still not mad about it, just grossed out.

I don't like Mark. It's just one of those things where a certain type of person rubs you the wrong way. But I 100% concur with Boba that their stuff is in rare company as high quality/worth the time to watch. I have a lot of respect for him. I don't think of any person as being "deserving" of a car or not, but of all people that should have one of the new Type R's, he should, it's made for him. I guess what sparked my comment is that I hate to think he did something stupid for one. I think Paying $10k over would have been a better investment

yeah, life is life, I think this is a great example of social media providing an outlet for people who are just overly eager to do the things.

I posted here, and the GRC forum that I got my GRC, because I know there are people who are enthusiastic, but this isn't most of you guy's first foray into something like this, and hell, even though I don't know most of you, I have been here for 20+ years at this point, so I've known most of the names in here for longer than I've known my wife.

I posted to my friends on FB, but I will not be posting to any reddit channels, random FB groups, nothing. seems stupid to me and will just bring entitled kids who think that just because I entered the same space they occupy they deserve to know every detail of my transaction. nope, not gonna do it. and what would I get out of it anyway? some fake internet points?

anyway, good for him that he got what he wanted for the price he was willing to pay, which included him running an advertisement for a dealership.

hell, I bet he could have bid out shilling a dealership and held out for invoice pricing, someone would have bit.

anyway, whatever, the FL5 is a great looking car, people who get one will be very lucky.

It was kind of weird how a portion of the video was spent on a dealership that screwed him over in the past but the new ownership is much better and sells vehicles at MSRP with the catch where if people want to bid on the vehicles then they sell to the highest bidder. I don't think I needed to see that stuff but I assume since Mark trashed the dealer in the past they gave him the CRT at MSRP on the condition that he would put in a story about how great the new ownership is compared to the past owners. Probably not a lot different to the videos he does with Chicago Auto Pros where he's advertising for them and likely gets smoking deal on PPF and tint. That's pretty normal business really. I subscribe to their channel so it's not that I don't like Mark and more that he's a really weird dude. Like really weird and socially awkward. Jack is excellent and the quality of their videos is great.

interesting the TPMS is based on wheelspeed, and doesn't have actual sensor, and the gear indicator is based on calculating engine speed with vehicle speed.

Honda did away with TPMS sensors long time ago. They use the abs and wheel speed sensor, or something along those lines. Honda always finds a way to save money. Getting rid of 4 TPMS sensors saves them a boat load, and in turn it saves the owners when they break.

having an actual sensor is awesome.

someone broke down the PIDs on the GRC, not only do the TPMS sensors give the actual pressure, but they do temps too, which is really cool.

there's also a PID for the center diff temp, rear diff temp, and trans temp.

if anyone still has the torque app, you can see all that stuff through that. I'll never track my car enough to where that would even matter, but I geek out on that **** for sure, I love data.

Automakers have been doing this for a while to get around the cost of TPMS. Even BMW used to do this with Canadian vehicles to keep costs down. I'm surprised Honda did that across the board though. I would much rather have a sensor.
