Default Why is it so damned hard...

for me to find an entry level electrical engineering position?

i am here to vent my frustration. ive had 3 total interviews. ive mailed out probably 30 resumes..email that is and received one reply.

my schools career services is over populated with kids who have better grades than i do i think.

im graduating from Georgia Tech with a 3.35 with an emphasis on wireless/RF/analog courses. Ive had a job every summer related to engineering and done a years worth of research at school......

anyone know of tech companies that are hiring that i should submit a resume to?

If you want to move north, I think a company we work with is looking for someone. I'll check tomorrow and PM you.

Did you sign up for the Career Fair type thing they are gonna have in early April? It says alumni but who knows, you should be able to go.. You graduating in May? If its any consolation, I got my first job out there like 4 days before graduation.. Talk about nerve-racking..

Are you looking outside Atlanta as well? You might have better luck if you are willing to move..

Not get down on you, but I would've been pleasantly surprised if you'd gotten a job after only 30 resumes and 3 interviews. There are many, many people with 10-20+ years experience in your field who aren't able to find positions.

Who told you, years ago, that a degree in EE is your ticket to a great job immediately after graduation? Find that person and punch them; there IS no such degree.

How are your software skills?

Most of the hiring for freshouts here at Motorola in Libertyville, IL (cellphone/handset division) are for entry level software engineer positions. Mind you, these are people with EE and CPE degrees who do embedded development in C/C++ on cell phones...if that's something that interests you.

The division that I'm in (about 50+ EEs) hired 1 freshout EE last year who was an intern.

That plus if you happen to disagree with Union situations, working for Verizon could prove difficult! I worked for a few CLECs that ran over Vzn. lines and we had a lot of troubles sometimes... It's not all the same I guess, but I've some friends at Vzn. and I guess it gets tricky.

It's sad, but.... bruticus pretty much nailed it. I got laid off twice in the "dot bomb" thing a couple years ago and sent out probably 300 résumés, if not more. I eventually gave up and took sales positions. I still look, but don't expect the market to be even remotely close to what it was before, whenever I get back in.
I imagine I'll get a base position and start over. Probably something more software-oriented.

I realize that's not EE, but it's the same across the board for a lot of places...

i dont do software...not really. im more interested in analog ICs, RF/wireless design, and packaging.

my resume is here:

http://www.rfengineerjobs.com/1235169-RFD

30 companies is a start...mostp eople i talk to say that getting a direct hire from the internet is hard.

i went to all thecareer fairs on campus so far, and i am submitting resumes to the on campus interview companies as their postings become available.

i still have the grad school prospect but i jsut got rejected from UCLA and that leaves me with washington, texas, or georgia tech to accept me.

i applied for an RF design entry level position at verizon just two days ago.

anyways i was just venting..ive got 2 more months to graduation.

I suggest defense.

My company (BAE Systems):
http://www.na.baesystems.com/careers/index.htm

Boeing
Lockheed Martin (have a huge plant in Marietta, GA)
Honeywell
Raytheon
Smiths Industries
L-3

Another local company that is currently looking for entry-level electrical engineers is NLX (work on flight simulators):
http://www.nlxcorp.com/corporate/hum...ities?OpenView

Other than that, keep plugging away.

ive looked at defense. right now im not desperate enough to go that route. getting a security clearance is not my favorite idea. im a privacy nut...about certain things, as you can see i post my resume online

...but its not out of the question. lockheed is not going to hire me. i went to a raytheon interview...

also, location is not an issue for me as long as im not in the boonies in the southeast. i avoid mississippi, alabama, arkansas, indiana, kentucky and so on...

not much wireless stuff there so its alright anyway

There is always the military. The AF will take you for sure as a developmental engineer or a civil engineer. Developmentals do R&D stuff (I think) and civil is more of managment and such.

I've seen on the Ball Aerospace site that they are looking for RF engineers. They're in the Denver area.

If you: have a driver's license, credit card, mortgage, car loan, SS#, pay taxes, and/or went to school using gov't loans, there ain't a whole lot about you the gov't doesn't already know.

Unless you're a deep-cover Cobra ninja agent.

Did you look at GTRI? That would be good route, especially since if you want to do graduate work, it's right there..
