Default 2024 crosstrek?

https://bestcarweb.jp/news/scoop/485900

It seems the role the crosstrek has now has been reversed somewhat. The article says its possible that the impreza is now going based on the upcoming crosstrek. What does that mean for the sedan version of the impreza. It also seems they are waiting to see the LA auto show will reveal the crosstrek seeing it is really big here in the states. If that really is the case now, is it about time the impreza has a different purpose

I mean Toyota has the supra and GR86, subaru could use this opportunity to follow what Toyota just did to their corolla, and return the impreza to its original roots

Impreza is on borrowed time. Just let it and the Legacy go.

I remember being told that the 3rd gen Legacy(2nd gen Outback) was actually designed more with Outback in mind then "detuned" for Legacy use. They increased the structural rigidity something like 120%. They made it cause their customers used them. They needed to MAKE them for how their customers used them. The did some "major" improvements to the Crosstrek's chassis over the Impreza; but, not sure if any "extra" measures were there for the SGP move. I don't recall being told anything special. With Crosstrek CLEARLY going to be king this month, it doesn't surprise me they focus on that aspect of the design and do something similar as with the Legacy to the Impreza.

I'm sure the new generation of Subaru buyers will love this new Crosstrek.

Meanwhile the brand's old guard and rally cache continue to fade into the background.

Too bad Toyota got greedy with GR Corolla production numbers, or I'd be on that wait list...

I think the new WRX was all the evidence you needed to know that the Crosstrek has taken priority over the Impreza. I even stated as much months ago after the reveal of the WRX. When you look at the sales number it makes sense as the Impreza is slowly fading away while the Crosstrek has been pretty successful.

You want "limited production" try getting your hands on an IS500...

The Crosstrek is such a great car. They really need to offer it with that sweet FA24DIT/6 speed combo.

The legacy still has purpose for customers that don't need the wrx and simply want a family sedan just like Toyota camry and Honda accord buyers. But having both the impreza sedan and Legacy may no longer be necessary. the impreza needs a new identity and purpose.

Id be ok if Subaru sold a Crosstrek with lowered to STI levels suspension, more power, and a manual. Call it a Crosstrek STI

that combo would be uniquely built for customers in the US though. Hell that combo with proper off-road treads would be a beast on dirt trails. However we need more plug-ins, hybrids, or all-electric models first to satisfy cafe regulations.

we have been asking for that for a long time, but until we get more electrified powertrains to offset cafe regulations, we can't build it without financial penalties

Ummmmm.....that would have been 2014 when it surpassed Impreza 4 and 5 door sales combined. A little less than a year and a half after going on sale. WRX has absolutely zero connection to it.

Strong proof people, sorry, SUBARU customers prefer the lift.

That article seems to say that they will even drop "XV" in favor of "Crosstrek". First time I've seen SBR fully lose out/bend to SOA. Not to say it hasn't happened before.

If the impreza become a derivative of the crosstrek, make an impreza sport based on that and give it more power, STI shocks and the manual. The impreza needs a new purpose. We already have the wrx and the legacy sedans

Sedans are on the way out. Look at Ford. Mustang only. Legacy sales are miserable. Camry is not a fair comparison as it dominates the industry.

sedans don't need to exist.

the lifted hatchback, what do the kids call it these days? a CUV?

anyway, lifted hatchbacks are good enough. give me a regular hatchback though, rather than a lifted one, and put some power in it, and make it manual.

but yeah, especially with the size of the opening most sedans get these days, it makes it a useless portal into an inaccessible space.

I respectly disagree. The Honda accord still sells. So does the Hyundai sonata, Kia optima, nissan altima and surprisingly Cadillac has not yet given up on the sedans yet either. Not everyone is looking for only suv's, and not all subaru customers are looking at wrx either. The legacy sedan still has purpose

I'm not anti-sedan (I have owned many). But look at the numbers:
https://media.subaru.com/pressreleas...uly-2022-sales

Impreza 17k YTD '22
Crosstrek 77k YTD '22

Legacy 15k YTD '22
Outback 101k YTD '22

I wish Subaru would bring a Frontier/Taco competitor. Since they’re all into the wilderness and outdoor now and all in, in the American market with family vehicles etc

The wilderness lineup needs to round out their lineup with a pickup of some sort. The Baja deserves to return. The truckbed must be able to at least fit a dirtbike in it.

Sedans are indeed on the way out; Toyota sold more Rav4s than Camrys starting in 2017, and while Camry sales continue to decline, Rav4 sales continue to increase.

Year Camry Rav4
2015 429k 315k
2016 388k 352k
2017 387k 407k
2018 343k 427k
2019 337k 448k
*2020 294k 430k
*2021 314k 407k

*Declines are related to pandemic, supply chain, etc.

It's a similar story at Honda, except that 2016 is when the CR-V overtook the Accord in sales, Accord sales continue to decline while CR-V sales continue to increase; they still sell ~200k Accords annually, but the CR-V is closer to 400k units annually (before pandemic, supply chain issues, etc.)

Sedans aren't gone yet, and are still profitable for Toyota and Honda, and I'd assume Kia/Hyundai & Luxury Marques, but for the smaller manufacturers or manufacturers that don't make significant profit on them, it makes sense to drop them from the lineup and focus on CUVs. When you're still selling ~300k units like Toyota is, sure keep on trucking for the time being, but when you're only selling >20k units? maybe it's time to remove it from the lineup and utilize that manufacturing capacity for something more profitable.

There aren't enough EV sedans out there to make a comparison to EV CUVs, but there may be a temporary saving grace for them as EV Sedans, given the same motors & Batteries, should have more range than their CUV siblings due to better aero & slightly less weigh.

Ford & Chevy couldn't compete with Honda & Toyota when it came to cars, and trucks & SUVs are their bread and butter (or silver and gold) so it made sense to dump sedans, but keep the performance cars. The Mustang & Corvette will hang on as long as they can, and although I'd take a Camaro over a Corvette (2+2 is better than 2+2golf bags in my mind) the Corvette is the more important name plate to GM, so the Camaro may drop off again, or not; now that the Vette is Mid-engine & DCT it has been further differentiated from the Camaro.

GM sells more Corvettes in a year than Subaru sells Imprezas, same for Camaros.

I mean Lambo & Ferrari started selling CUVs too, the writing is on the wall.

Nothing new in the article, save for the XV name drop. Spy shots of the new Crosstrek have been around for a while. Small, evolutionary design changes, same shape, shared interior with the Legacy/WRX/Outback (i.e. ginormous centre screen, no more upper multifunction display). Continued speculation on the engine: FB20, FB25, or CB15/16/18, as well as on the likelihood that the 6MT (as well as the 5MT in the impreza) will be dropped for good (cheaper to drop 2 transmissions than to adapt EyeSight to them). One could also expect a "wilderness" Crosstrek, if the fad persists.

Expect it. It's been seen.

And pretty sure those spy shots were of it as well.
