Default My wife is going to NOLA to help with the relief effort.....and I am worried

She calls me today and tells me that the staff of her clinic is going to go down to NOLA next Friday through Monday to rescue animals and get them to Jackson. She would leave next Friday early, and be back the next Monday late. Apparently because of their expertise in handling exotic animals (monkeys, snakes, tigers, crap like that) her clinic was selected out of the region to go help. She is a vet tech, and her doctors are going down as well.

One side of the coin:
I am happy she is willing to help the stranded animals, pets, wildlife and get them to their owners since, in some cases; the pet is all the owner has left.

On the other side:
She has to get like 10+ vaccination shots, prep on doing work while wearing a bullet proof vest , and after she gets back she has to be checked every 4 days for infectious diseases from the water/animals/people. Also she is not going to be going on the edge of town, but IN town with fully armed forces to evacuate animals from mansions, homes and flooded houses, zoos, animal sanctuaries that have gotten stranded and the likes.

Here is my problem…

I want her to go help, but at the same time I have never been so scared for her in my life. I honestly have a very bad feeling about this whole thing. Can’t put my finger on it, I just have not felt right about it since she told me what she would be doing.

I told her to do it if she wants, who am I to tell her not to go. But I am so worried for her, I won’t her form her from Friday morning when she leaves form SAC air force base til she comes back in Monday, and even then I am not allowed to see her Monday night because she has to be checked overnight before she can be released

CN: my wife has the chance to go to NOLA to help evacuate animals, should I tell her how worried I am for her, or hold it in and hope she comes out ok.

Geeze, that's crazy. Umm, tell her exactly what you posted. You don't want her to go personally, but you can't stop her from going. It sounds like it's her decision.

Oh, and Option 4 = Tell her you're proud of her, but that you're going to worry about her constantly, and to check in often.

i love animals, don't get me wrong, and at it's base i think her motivations are noble ... but at this stage of the game everything left behind is sick and probably dying, and the environment is beyond dangerous - besides the disease factor, anybody that they missed during forced evacuations is probably some kind of rangy lunatic. it's like rescuing puppies in the environment of Resident Evil.

also, military/law enforcement/medical personnel have much better things to do than get the back of people trying to save stranded pets.

again, noble as hell ... but i just can't justify the actions given the situation.

The people down there have no expericnce helping the animals that are stranded though. most of the peopel and money down there is being spent on helping the people and not the animals. A lot of the animals are coming down with disease and spreading it because they are not handled properly. they are bringing in vets and vet-techs from all over the US to help.

I would rather save a puppy than some gun toting crack head invading the mansion he doesn't live in.

That's how I'm feeling now. My wife is leaving again for Houston and she won't be back until October. At least she's helping people who are in a far worse situation than mine...

On another note, those animals are down there in those homes because of the people. It's only right that people make an effort to save them.

I take it she does't have the option of going down there and working on the sidelines? Like having other people bring animals for her to check out?

At a certain point I would tell you that it's her decision, saving the animals is important, and they need all the people they can get. But if it were actually my wife, I would probably try to persuade her otherwise.

I know that's not helpful , but I wish you the best.

If it was JUST pets I would tell her to not go, but at the same time she is going after zoo animals, exotic pets/animal sanctuaries and what not.

her main job down there will be to inspect and determine if the dog has an infectious disease, if it does they need to take care of it(more than likely with half an oz of lead) and help NOT spread the diseases. people are getting hella sick down there, and it is mainly because of their pets....and they need to fix it I guess.

By next friday I'm betting it will be pretty secure down there. I'm sure things will be fine and I'm glad someone is looking out for the animals. I'm not giving any money to help the unappreciative people down there, but have given money to help teh animals.

You can say what you like, but while I was in the Marines, I had not one reservation nor feeling of guilt for shooting people, but I couldn't shoot a deer even if it was heading right for us. There is just something about the innocence of an animal that makes it very hard for me to willingly harm one. As bad as this sounds, I would kill a room full of people before my dog any day.

since strategic air command is based here(offut AFB). TONS of jets/planes/supplies are coming though omaha. most of it getting loaded up and flown down 24/7. The planes are coming and going out of offut AFB all day and night right now, including air force 1 on a regular basis(wich I don't get).

That is my hope, a girl went down there last weekend and left today already, she said it was a war zone the first weekend, gun toting people protecting their animals, looters, crack heads, weapons. That is when they did a lot of work with the zoo I guess. This week is the bird/cat sanctuaries around town(apparently there is a lot) she called and said it is a LOT better this weekend, and by next weekend it will just be a cleaning sweep more than likely. Just going through the residential areas and getting any dogs/cats/pets that are dead or dying out for health reasons. Then rescuing any they can as well and get them on a plane to Jackson for testing and release to their owners once they are decided to be good and healthy.

i would be very worried - i know one of the producers from hard copy and she cannot get film crews to go back - not for any amount of money!

its far too dangerous - u had better buy her an AK47 or MP5 as a going away present, bear spray will just not be enough

btw - as a volunteer citizen the military "rules of engagement" do not apply
