The FA motor sucks a decent amount of oil through the PCV valve. Pull the rubber hose off where it meets the intake manifold and you will see the oil inside the hose and on the nipple of the intake manifold.

FYI, we are making over 400 HP / 400 TQ and revving the motor to 9000 RPM with a fully built motor using forged pistons. The car has over 5000 miles and we have never had to add oil to the motor. We did install an AOS when the car had 100 miles on it though

What oil are you using in it? 300V 15W-50?

We used the OEM oil for 1000 miles then put in Motul 5100 for another 1500 miles and after that 300V 0 / 40

I just put the 300V 0W-40 in my FXT. The new Ester Core has less anti-wear additives than the old stuff and relies more on the eater base stocks for anti-wear. I'm doing a voa on it soon.

I know there are a few folks over at FT86club using 300V 0W-20 with no consumption. They don't need no steenkin' API certification!

Now on a boosted high power build I would never break-in the motor this way as even 5 psi of boost has more power and cylinder pressure than this car. Without adequate cylinder pressure its much harder to seat these hard steel rings. I think the guys that babied this engine too much are going to be the ones who didn't get a fast ring seat and will pay the price, maybe just initially, with more oil consumption.

Also as oil breaks down you'll use much more. So in many cases you'll see no oil consumption in 1000the miles, then 1/2 quart at 2000the miles, and then a full quart between 2-3kthe miles. Just get in a habit of checking that oil at least every other gas fill up.
Good info. I replaced my new 2013 Impreza's oil and filter at 1k miles since I have seen not in a car filter but in high performance race motorcycles what you describe inside the filter. Ive been thinking of switching the 0w20 subaru synthetic oil recommended to a Motul . Any recommendations? has anyone here actually used 0w20 and had sucess for long term engine life? It seems real lite and I feel that thats why once the engine has been run for over 30 min, it gets noisy as the oil breaks down.

I did the first one at 1100 miles because it's a new motor and a second at 4500 with castrol gold 5w-30, no issues, no burning and the car feels great.

I switched to the Motul 0w-30 X-Lite and it has worked great so far. I'm at about 5800 miles now, changed it at 1200 and about 4500. No oil consumption.

Didn't really check for consumption before I changed oil...whoops. Switched to Motul 8100 Eco-Lite 0W-20, will report back after 5K miles on it.

It's because the 0-20w is like water that it gets noisy when broken down. Honestly there is zero chance when I get serious into racing this engine that I will be running a 0-20w oil and will likely switch to a 10-30/40 or something of that nature.

The 0 weight oils are more efficient and may net a couple HP over a thicker oil but honestly under hard conditions such as racing or when the oil breaks down it's not worth the trade off (especially if boosting the motor).

Thanks,
Phil Grabow

11,500 miles on my BRZ. Did the oil change today and it took the entire 6 quarts of Subaru Genuine Oil with a tiny bit of room to fill some more if I wanted to. Does this seem odd to anyone else? According to Rally Sport Direct it's supposed to be 5.8 quarts (according to Subaru) and they barely used 5 quarts.

I understand that this new, naturally aspirated boxer engine runs at a relatively high 12.5:1 compression ratio, and that the stock oil is a very lightweight 0w-20, but even so, I was surprised by the engine’s consumption. I did heed the owner’s manual recommendation of “driving nicely” and not exceeding 4,000 RPM during the first 1,000 miles and further realize that during the break-in period on some engines, oil consumption can be higher while the rings seat, and so on, but I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with their D-S4 Boxer?

Thanks,

Cobra Joe

Is yours a manual transmission? There is a pump at the back rear right of the engine for auto's that is not used on the manuals. The blocking plate in its place is known to leak oil, its an easy fix (they just didn't use enough sealant at the plant.

This thread kinda makes my head hurt. I don't have a good source local that I have found for Motul or Redline. I am an Amazon whore and Eneos (3230300) API SN/ILSAC GF-5 Certified 0W-20 is available with Prime.

Seemed like few people on 86club liked it, anyone disagree?

It really truly is. I'm glad someone else agrees. There is rarely any information, and zero moderation of the insane posts. I've seen multiple posts about the gps system and how the doors unlock in the same day. Just truly the most idiotic questions ever. Think headlight washer fluid level low warning light.

Why does the site suck so bad?

TONS of millennials who just got their first car asking insane questions+ zero moderation

9000 rpm can we see a video of that! dang!

I don't have any issues using Eneos 0W20. Interval of 7500 miles and no UOA because who cares.

I don't know if anyone has said this or not, but any engine new or old can consume up to 1 quart of oil a month.
