Exclamation *need information on selling car*

Hey all,

I'm about to sell my old college car to someone who is out of state(PA). Since I live in NJ I was wondering what steps must we do in order to make this sale legal?? I've been looking at the NJ DMV website with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dave

I am assuming that you own the car already (no loans and so on)

All you have to do is this -
on the back of the title, there's a place for you to sign your life, er.. car, away - as well as a place for you to fill out the info for the person who's buying the car. You also need to put down the sale amount for tax purposes.. but you can be nice and put it down for less if you'd like to make his life easier *lol*

Remove your license plates. Eventually hand them into DMV.

Once he signs it - it's all good, and you're done.

However, if you owe money on the car (i.e. loan) - what you'll need to do is pay off the loan, and get the clear title from the banking institution - then you can go from there. Be aware that this alone can take a day or two, because the agency doesn't neccessarily always have the title on hand! But if you warn them, they can get it and make sure it's on hand if you're doing a transaction that way.

Thanks for the reply! I have the title so I don't have the worry about the bank playing any role. Anyway, we were worried about him driving back to PA without any plates on since i'd be taking mine off. again, thanks for all your help.

To drive the car legally the buyer would have to go to NJ DMV with the title and insurance card, show that the vehicle is being taken out of state, and they will issue a temporary "in-transit" tag to use while driving it back to his home state. Once there he goes to his local DMV for a permanent registration and plates.
At least that is how I believe it works.

the other options available:

1) You drive the car out there, and then he can drive you back or something along those lines

2) He calls his insurance company, gets temporal insurance - drives your car with your plates on it out there and then mail you back your plates
