Default Non-Subaru car problem...need help

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but i'm getting kinda desperate now. I tried other forums but this seems to be the only place people answere questions seriously, sometimes anyway

here is the problem:
my dad has a 1994 Buick Riviera (I know nothing to get excited about) and whenever you turn the car off after driving it (key out of ignition and everything) a few seconds later a noise starts up. It sounds as if a small motor is running and appears to be comming from the rear fenders. The sound will pursist on and off for about 10 mins after the car is off then just stop for good.

does anyone have any idea what it could be??? and/or how to fix it?

the car doesn't have an airride suspension or anything so thats out.
could it be a fuel pump??
other suspension component?
thanks in advance for the help

While the car may not have a true air suspension, it may have a 'load leveling' suspension. My bet is that's what you're hearing.

I honestly have no idea, but my best guess would be a fuel pump, arent those tucked into the back near or under the trunk...

try turning the car on and off with the trunk open/someone under the car and check if you see anything moving

Look to see if there is a fuse or relay for the fuel pump. If there is pull it after you shut the car off. If you still hear the noise then it's not the fuel pump.

if that was the case wouldn't this be something that would have occurred since the car was new? or is it something that could wear and become more noisy with time?
this has only been occurring for about a year now

This guy knows his stuff. It is for certain the levelers, my mom has had three Rivieras, and two models ('89 and '91) had them. Noisy and weird, they would come on sometimes in the garage after hours of sitting.

I believe it is a GM luxury thing, because the levelers were also on the Sedan Deville ('95), Eldorado ('97) and the STS Seville ('99) that they had. Now they have a Escalade. Bleh. I loved that STS.
