Default Project: Get that white thing moving in Fishy's driveway

Well, the time has come and I'm going to start rolling on getting the Corrado back in working order again. I have a clutch on order, and will get master and slave clutch cyls also. Maybe a lightend flywheel if I get adventurous. For those who don't know I parked my Corrado roughly 2 years ago when the tranny started acting funny and not shifting. When I asked garages about it, they wanted a ton of money just to look at it. All wanted imdeiately to drop the tranny with out even looking at anything else quoting $500 - $700 in labor right there....with out even fixing anything yet. The clutch is making alot of noise so thats going to get yanked. So I'm wondering if there are any garage days coming up, or could have one here....that would be in the mood (and ability) to pull a tranny off a 4cyl Fwd car and do a clutch job? I can drive the car wherever, just takes some careful shifting. Also need to get it regeisterd and insured. I have the factory service manual so procedures are explaned in that. Thanks in advance. This is the wreck in question.

The car looks sweet! It's a waste to let it just sit there.

I agree, but being that I'm a computer geek....money and jobs suck right now. But I have the ability to get the money aside right now, so I'm jumping at the chance to get this done and have some fun in the process. It's a 1.8L supercharged (9psi) motor....oldschool VW 8v. 160ish hp, 170ish ft/lbs. the interior looks new other than a small crack in the pass door card.

Hopefully I can get it running this summer because my driving record has been way to clean lately....and I miss the state trying to take my licenes away.

it's a 12 year old VW with 120k hard miles on it....I know it's not 2k mi WRX with a blown tranny....but what can you do!? And what is with you and the VW's? It's not like you don't know the story. Some people spent money and got a car, I spent it and got a bike....wanna race?

dude, I'm just busting your balls, you know that.

besides, I think my RS could take that thing right now in a race

And you know damn well I'm not a good enough rider to race bikes yet...but once I am, I'm willing to take it to a track (with turns, dammit) and run with you.

yeah, that whole "can only shift at 3k" thing kinda kills my pull down the straights. Once running it will just be a weekend toy, I can't afford to run it as a daily driver. It did break alot when it was running, but I did put 30k on it a year and had fun for about 29k of it. So I'll give the car a 2nd chance as a toy and not a daily driver. Got the ghetto glider of a lumina for the highway beater now!

I had my eyes on one of those WAY back when i first got my lic, it sucked seeing that thing getting pelted by acorns in your driveway whenever I was @ fishys.

If you want to do a clutch replacemnt right there I could be talked into lending a hand. No VW experience, but I've done it in Neons, Sentras and about a million Hondas before.

Its not like it has to get done in one day, or even have any sort of short time frame right?

nope, no real timeframe to work in. If needed we can do one part one weekend, and the rest another. All I'd need help in is rolling the now defunct Corrado out of the way till next weekend. I have a daily driver and a bike to use so it working or not doesn't effect my ability to get around. I figure since you guys tear down AWD cars, a Fwd should be easier. I'll stock up on what ever you guys want and all the cigars you can smoke.

While I have no clutch/tranny work experience, I'd love to come lend an extra hand and see how it's done.

My Qualifications: opposable thumbs, good with tools, helped remove several trannies on different occasions, and one time at band camp...

Default ....hmmm, something new...

Get in touch with me (PM). I have the garage space and an engine hoist and probably anything that we'd need. This would not have to be complete in a day. I've yet to do a FWD engine pull and after pulling the flathead out of my 52 pickup yesterday, I need something to look forward to. You'll have to take that rear sway bar out of the trunk of the Cobra, however. I'm in Hopkinton, MA. I'm assuming that it can drive down here....my car trailer was sold to stop myself from dragging home any more projects (really!).

Its a good thing I don't have a trailer or a garage, or tools, or money. Cuz otherwise I'd be carting stuff home left and right.

Lets do it at Jacks place so I can drool over the Cobra.

oh oh i wanna help!

Fun times...I could use the experiance cause who knows when I'll be doing the same thing to the GTI!

Maybe we could get a small mod day together, even at Lisa's. Sits at the end of a dead end, lots of room for cars. I have a Audi TT Short Shifter to put in.

Well, in my curiousity, I decided to bleed the Master and slave cyl on the clutch. Problem is the Mastercyl didn't take on fluid, just air.....so no the clutch pedal is doing a whole lot of nothing....other than dropping straight to the floor. So untill I figure out how to get the master and slave cyl working...It's not moving too far. I was planning on replacing them anyways so this would have been done one way or another. Anyone have a trailer handy?!

My friend is quite the expert when it comes to VW's. He's got himself an 87 Scirocco, and has owed 6 others before this one. We also have a Gr 2 GTi that we hope to have ready by Maine winter club rally. If there was some way to get it to Long Island, I'm sure he'd love to help out. Let me know if interested.

Man, wish I was out that way, but I don't think it'd be feasable to get it out to NY. I have no trailer....and no truck to tow it with for that matter.

If we can do a head gasket on a Neon - we should be able to figure this thing out too.

Any official garage date set?

Yeah, if you like working on neat quirky cars.....this is the one for you. You'll never apreaciate repairs till your paying the germian premium price that VW likes to charge. You'd get to know this thing inside and out......because thats about what you would have fixed. Chad, I'd love to have your friend in on this. would be good to at least have someone involved who has done this work before. As far as when....I'd like to start in the next week or so.....I'm unemployed so nothing really taking up my time, but weekends would work better for the general populus. Beer and pizza will be here, and cigars if you want em. Maybe you guys can give and idea when you could do it and we could see which weekend (if not a few weekends depending) would work best. Thanks again guys, I knew I could count on some help from you.
