Default head scratching after rear disc conversion

Installed rear disc set up on my 95L. Other than normal expected problems(rusted bolts) got everything together. Took a long time to bleed the brake system to get all the air out, but seem to have a low pedal still. No brake warning light is on, and car can be driven, but not much pedal there......we have re-bled system with no improvement........ideas anyone???
The rear disc's I bought were used, off a WRX

Question

Have you bled all 4 brakes each time?

I had this problem after my rear disk conversion... part was attributed to only bleeding the rears and the other part was a result of brand new pads in the rear.

You might need to bleed the master too.

In what order did you bleed the lines?

This is the proper order for bleeding the lines :

Code:
                   FRONT
    3 1

    2 4
                   REAR

All 4 have been bled each time. We havent bled the master cylinder. The order above is one of the orders we tried. Ive talked to a couple of experienced subaru techs and both said go from rr, rf, lr, lf. Ive tried bleeding methods in the shop manual and the chilton manual. Im trying gravity now. The rear calipers are stock WRX. A friend of mine locally did this swap using bigger calipers and the stock master cyl.

Thanks,
Jim

Well threw in the towel and took it to the dealer. Lucky for us we know both the service manager and the technician working on the car. When problem corrected I will post what fixed the problem.

hi, I have a 94 Impreza that came with four discs. I have the same horrible brake feel as you. I have also bleed the lines and am going to be upgrading my brakes. I'm thinking of replcaing the master cylinder in hopes of getting a better brake feel. My current brakes have massive fade, mushy pedal and a long almost to the floor pedal length. Let me know what the problem is.
thanks, micah

In all honesty, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference what order you bleed the brakes, as long as it's done thoroughly.

I sure hope this isn't the only bleed method you are trying! The most accurate way to describe gravity bleeding is to say "It doesn't do a damn thing"

What size MC do you have?

Also......did you start the car when you were bleeding. That one thing can make all the difference in the world. The difference in pressure generate by just adding the booster into the equation is huge, and can help push stubborn air towards the calipers.

If you have too small a MC, it doesn't matter how much bleeding you do. You will have extended pedal travel. Only solution is to upgrade the MC to a larger bore then you currently have.

ahh if you are stillhaving a problem try switching the calipers around. my buddy had 2.5 brakes on his l and we had the calipers on the wrong side and the brakes would not work. it was like there was always air in the system.
but what do i know?

good point - the calipers are sided, make sure the bleed screws are on the top, if not you have them on the wrong sides and they will still be full of air.

Maybe you should try reverse bleed, where you use something like a Mitivac and pump brake fluid into the bleeder instead of pumping fluid out of the bleeder. BTW, I want to do rear brake conversion on my OBS too. Do I just need a disc brake knuckle, calipers, and discs? Or is there other parts that I need to change out?

Try searching this forum under my username and keyword "drum", (or just the keyword). I fretted over this, before performing this" irreversible" mod.

You might need the e-brake cables too.

Check out this site. It was very helpful to me when I swaped in legacy turbo brakes.
