Default 2005 WRX Tweeter replacements

Hey guys. I'm getting ready to have tint done on my car and decided to remove door panels on my own instead of paying the shop to do it and likely mess them up or not tell me if there are issues.

I removed the drivers door panel (not card, as this car has a proper full panel) first, only to find an aftermarket speaker install, appearing to have likely been carried out by a 12 year old. The butyl was all sloppy and the plastic was torn in a few places. A couple clips were broken. They had added some butyl sound deadener under where the speaker mounts, covering the holes to the clips. There was a crossover sticky taped inside the door and everything was rusty. I'm so very thankful they only drilled holes for the screws. I'd have been livid if the door had been hacked up too.

Anyways. I'm having a real tough time finding a proper tweeter to install as the factory did with the center screw hole. I'm reading a lot about passive and active crossovers and am wondering, can I just add a nice set of 6.5" 2-way speakers in the bottom and call it a day? The aftermarket ones were only using the lower speaker leads anyways, so I would expect they would sound just fine using a 2-way with the passive crossover built in and not replacing anything in the stock tweeter location, yes?

You're not going to find tweeters that will install the same as stock. I forget exactly what I did years ago but I'm pretty sure there was some E6000 involved. Lasted well over a decade so is it actually wrong?

The higher frequencies are more easily localized so it is best to put the tweeters up high. The crossover that comes with component speakers is passive; just better than what you get with a typical coaxial speaker.

You are correct. I was on mobile and didn't even glance at the username. I do apologize. I have found most of the time, if you either use mobile or avoid the quick reply box, it will not double your posts. However, it will add a second line when you return down for some reason, so I just get in the habit of previewing, fixing the issues, then posting.

You should post these pro tips in OT. It's a big problem over there.

I have to be honest I came here because I am going through the same thing but also getting my rookie posts and replies. They don't have these rules on another car forum I belong to. I wonder if it brings more frivolous posting.... I just put component speakers in the other day!

I've done a few installs in various Subarus over the years, and to answer the OP's question, I find that the JBL Club series tweeter seems to fit in the stock locations rather well. IIRC, you may need to get a little bit creative with the mounting bracket, but not a crazy complicated process, I assure you.

And NutBucket addressed the advantages of using a component vs 2-way speaker.
