Default How strong is the STOCK WRX transmission

Well how strong can it handle alot of 5000rpm+ dumps and slips. I have a GTi and i would like to trade it for a WRX soon. But i would like to launch a WRX with no worries of the trans going out on me. Is there anyway to make it stronger so it can take the punishment of hard launch's at the drag strip

Don't ever rev it up to 5000+ RPM's and sidestep the clutch and you'll be fine. Power shifting is also a no-no, and if you are accustomed to "catching" gears in you VW you'll need to relearn how to shift because the excess power won't be bled off through wheelspin, it'll be the tranny mount bottoming out and sending the excess stress through the transaxle case.

The tranny in the WRX does just fine, but you need to adjust a bit so you don't break it.

Me and my friend switched cars for 2 days he gets my golf and i get his 02 WRX 5 speed. I did i 5000rpm clutch dump in the wet and it just spinned at all 4 corners then i chirped 2nd just a little. Man the WRX is so much fun, the whole day i was going side ways losing control and stuff. Plus the WRX feels more solid then my GTi. BTW all the losing control and going sideways was done on a closed course All i got to say wow to the WRX. I will stay away from 5000rpm but 6500rpm likes me too Yeah i kept hitting reverse instead of 4th, on the GTi its different. But i got used to the WRX fast. I love first gear on turns god its fun. How can you guys handle the power

hehe, I love reving her up and dropping the clutch quickly in the rain. Granted, it's wet so I guess it's sorta cheating, but it feels cool to have the wheels spin like crazy before you rocket off.

Seriously though, you don't want to drive it like that on dry pavement, especially trying to catch gears. Simply launching the car hard is no big deal if you do it smoothly, but if you're jerky about it something is gonna break eventually. Same thing goes for upshifting, slip the clutch a bit more, feather the throttle, something, just don't let the clutch out too quickly before the revs are near where they need to be for the next gear.

People around here like to bitch about how weak the tranny in the WRX is, but I have yet to believe it. Learn to shift smoothly, there will be less drama, and you'll shift faster and more efficiently. People have hopped in my car with me at the drag strip and told me that they didn't feel like they were going very fast, because my upshifting feels like you're a passenger in an automatic, probably smoother near redline.

The WRX is a truely great car, enough power, exceptional handling, but the drivetrain CAN NOT handle abuse. Drive fast, have fun, just don't abuse it. I redline my car many times every day, and I know my gears are going to hold up just fine.

We are just good friends. But if he crash's my car his car will have a telephone pole in the middle of his car But yeah all i was doing is taking every gear to 7200rpm

you can get the same 60ft times as a GTI in the WRX and youll never have to worry about the tranny.

if you want to run 1.760ft times (about half a second quicker than the GTI can do) then you may have to worry.

though, many of us have bee doing it. with 5-6krpm clutch SLIPS, not dumps!

That is the reason and don't let anyone drive my subaru. I give a hard time even to my mechanic. Everytime he needs to check something, I am sitting right there by his side. No one is going to blow my trainy. I know how people treat cars that do not belong to them. Just look at me driving my cousin's supra.

Yep thats true. Ok this is what he did to my car. He went 137mph because i have a limiter stock. He had sex in my car ganna kill him:monkey: He burned out, pulled my E-brake. Redlined every gear too.

Thsi is what i did to his car. Went on a open grass field and did 10 prefect donuts Did some nice drifts too. Lost control in the wet about 6 time. But i know how to do it now. Went only 120mph on his car. Almost crashed into a cement wall by the church at 11pm because i was trying to do donuts on dry ground and i did 1 circle and thats it and almost hit the cement wall . Yep i had a good 2 days Now i want a REX but i will not be doing that stuff. Only on ice and thats it.

Oh BTW What is the top speed of a WRX. Because me and him went past 140mph just a little past. But today he said he went about 146-150mph because it was getting pretty close to the Miles thing. Yep he's a crazy fvcker

launching is holding the engine at a set RPM and sliding the clutch out so that the car won't bog and will react quickly....dumping hte clutch is revving it to a set speed and just letting the clutch out all the way snapping the driveline w/ a harsh violent power application.

you guys must be retarded, do whatever you want to each other's cars.. I f I ever let a friend drive my car, and he/she pulled something dumbass like a 180 in it, some serious ass kicking would be called for. I love my car, I treat it hard sometimes but I never destroy it.

So learn how to drive a car, not destroy it :monkey:

I have to admit that I am totally stunned at what these guys have done to each other's cars. The only thing that I can see happening from here is that when his buddy's tranny in his WRX fails, he's gonna complain how weak they are. I must admit that I'm fed up with the people that simply abuse their car's, and expect them to last forever. And then when they don't, they act like they don't understand. It's people like this that make everything harder for us to get taken care of at dealerships, when we have a legitimate problem. I'm just getting started too, so I think that I better quit before I get myself into trouble. Also, posts like those should be deleted in my opinion.:monkey:

1. You NEVER have a reason to feather/slip the clutch between gears. You need to roll out of the throttle at the top of the previous gear, not feather the clutch.
2. If you are going to launch hard, you WANT wheelspin, not the sharp, disgusting thud that you get from these 4k-5k fast slips. I've ridden in two other WRXs driven like this, and I can honestly say my car's drivetrain sounds much happier on a full 7k fast slip spinning the front wheels than these do. You will also find that the people launching like this (e.g. nymeti, etc.) aren't breaking trannies.
3. Don't immediately run out and put super sticky tires on your car. Again, wheelspin = good, sharp, disgusting thuds and clanks = bad. You will notice that nathan's 12.3 was run on stock tires. The guy at the NHRA Import Nationals running 12.5s? Stock tires.

Personally, I'm more afraid of powershifting the 1-2 shift. Then again, I've raced from a stop a total of 3 times in 15K miles.

Well today was a sad day for me! let me start out by saying this. I always baby my car, only went to the dragstrip once, never auto x'd. i always shift easy and smooth, and today in traffic driving normal i heard a funny noise when i put it in second gear. at the next light i put it in first to 2nd a couple of times it sounded funny every time it clicked into second. Then when i started driving again my second gear was making the loudest noise, then my third gear was too, every gear was just crunching. good thing i was only like 500 ft from my house when all this happened. the car wont go into gear. my tranny had to be defective because if u know me and have seen me drive i am a good driver and always treat my car great. my friends always make fun of me for having such a fast car and not beating it and racing it. i dont know what happened.

Did you let cashmoneyukr borrow it? He probably did 6000 RPM launches dumping the clutch. He also did dougnuts in a construction zone. You shouldn't let anyone drive your car anymore!!

Wasn't this the same guy a few months back that pulled sorta the same story out of his ass about how crazy he and his 'friend' was? :monkey:

I recall his adventures with the parental units and the "if I do 'good' in school, they will get me a WRX" sorta thing... I also recall the many grammatical errors.

If so, , welcome back... I guess.

As for thread relevancy: ... nah, I'm not even gonna try. Ain't I a jerk?
