![]() so i have an auto [not my choice..just seemed most practical for the city :/ ]
anywayyy. i was messing aorund with the 1,2, 3 gears. and i wondered if i could downshift the same as my friends manual. so i was in 1st, hit about 3k rpm, shifted to 2nd, let it be for a tiny bit, then downshifted and floored it, i loved the response..but RIGHT when i did that someone called me, a call i couldn't miss, so i go to answer it and have no hand to shift gears for a second, forcing my car to sit at about 7k for a good second. i hated hearing that sound. just making sure if i don't do this again i won't have any problems? ![]()

![]() how'd you rev it all the way to 7k? Our revline starts at around 6500rpm
![]() I'm sure if you only did it once, it'd be ok. |

![]() Its no big deal to bounce off the rev limiter once every now and again. Its not great for the engine as far as wear and tear and prolonged engine life but there shouldnt be any damage from what you did. Thats why they have the limiter so if this happens you dont rev to the moon. Our cars make peak HP at like 6000-6500 RPM so im sure its okay to be in that range for a second.

![]() well who was the one to tell you that it was alright? Also think about it when they are stress testing cars do you think that they are doing that? no your car is meant to stay in D id keep it there or 3rd i mean at most id go up but never down

![]() if I pass someone at a certain speed I downshift into 3 or 2 because in reality, it takes it too long from O/D. trust me, as a 4EAT owner, I know and others can back me up on it

![]() yea, but only do it when you need. and when taking off on snow/ice, keep it in second until you get up to speed, then put it into 3 and leave it there, because in O/D the car is basically 90/10 which I learnt the hard way [actually spun on SNOW tires]. keeping it in 3 keeps the tranny more active to transfer power. first-hand, I learnt these 2 things to do everytime I slowed down:
-slow down and put car into second while slowing to increase engine braking and to create less stress on brakes [my brakes are going because of NOT doing that] -when you have to take off again, KEEP THE CAR IN SECOND [this allows the car to take off from second gear from a standstill; nay-sayers, READ THE MANUAL THAT COMES WITH THE CAR], and accelerate normally, and once you pass 30mph+ then shift and KEEP IT in 3 [unless you are on the highway]. ***NOTE: THIS ONLY WORKS FOR 4EAT'S. 5MT's HAVE NO REAL SAY IN THIS*** ~Clinton |

![]() rev limiter prevents the engine to damage itself. thats why its there. i will jus tsit there and bounce, wont hurt the engine.

![]() manual shifting our ATs is perfectly fine. There are a TON of threads about it. There are people who have 80k miles and do it every time they drive. It won't hurt a thing.

![]() just don't down shift into any gear that will be putting you at more than 3.5k rpm...

![]() The automatic trans, while horribly sluggish and power robbing in the newer impreza's, is not harmed by manually shifting. Weather you drive in "D" or 1, 2 3, etc. doesn't cause any abnormal or additional wear (besides the additional wear of extra shifting at the hand of the regretful AT owner). When you drive in "D" you use the same exact gears as 1,2,3 just without the ability to hold a gear. Now this doesnt mean being a dumbass wont get your trans slammed if you downshift at too high a speed causing overrev or forcing your engine into the rev limiter with no way to "bounce" off the limit because the wheels are now driving the engine instead of the engine driving the wheels. Rev Limiters are not idiot proof, just keep the engine speed limited while under acceleration due to cutting fuel, ignition or whatever it may be. However the limiter doesn't "apply the brakes" when you downshift at too high a wheel speed for the selected gear to prevent physically driving the engine to a overrev situation. (The ECU may not allow a downshift like this to occur in an AT, I don't know.)

![]() **NOTE: this will scare/annoy the 5MT owners reading this now**
to see how smart the subie ECU's are, do what I did a couple times: go on a highway, and hit about 65-80mph and pull the shifter down to 1; the car will only dowmshift into 3rd. brake if you are going off to an exit and leave it there, and at 40-48mph it will downstift into second, then at 27-32mph, it will downshift into 1st. Also, the ECU is smart enough to not granade itself on downshifts. it will only blip to reach ~5,600RPMs on downshift and knows what engine speed to down/upshift on, hence "Automatic" ~Clinton |
