Toyota 86 Chief Engineer Promises Next Gen To Exceed Expectations


With the replacement of the Toyobaru 86/BRZ twins already confirmed, the model’s chief engineer Tetsuya Tada had a few things to say about the second generation of their rear-drive coupe.

Speaking to Motor via a translator, Tada-san said that the new car is going to surprise everyone when it will be eventually revealed.

“We have started planning the next generation 86 [but to] try to provide something beyond people’s expectation is not easy,” he said. “It will definitely be above the fans’ expectation, because if you supply what all the fans really want, nobody gets really surprised or impressed, so wait and see, we provide something that will be really surprise.”

The 86’s chief engineer has said in the past that adding a turbo to the new generation model would be the ‘easy answer’ but he dismissed the use of traditional hybrid power in the new car.

“Not necessarily we would be saying hybrid as such, hybrid could be a part of the answer but if [we] provide just a normal hybrid it make no-one surprise[d],” he said.

When asked if this means that the new model will get an electric motor to boost the petrol engine Tada-san said, “It’s a good idea but it is not surprising as [we] want to make. The whole package as a new generation 86 … want to make everyone go wow, and beyond expectations.”

The only way to make this car relevant (to me) is forced induction, or a massive displacement bump/more cylinders (even less likely than a turbo). What will probably happen is some kind of appearance package and/or some TRD badges, couled with more tech (eg. extra unnecessary weight), no performance increase what-so-ever.

“The (current) 86 maybe can go slightly smaller but it wouldn’t have much of a less weight or make it less cost, so at the time when developed 86 like that, that was the best balance between cost and (practicality of) usage.

“Currently because technology has advanced more … maybe if you reconsider same good balance we might be able to make it smaller.”

And what about hitting the magic one-tonne figure, to match the current Mazda MX-5?

So more power, MAYBE, less weight definitely If I had to pick one or the other i'd take less weight from the MFG and get the power aftermarket, power is cheap / light is $$$.

Either way, 4 or so years away.

it would be great if they could have met the original goal of 2500 lbs at 200hp. But if they really want to hit the mark they should get serious and go for 2400 lbs or less and no less than 210hp, it is suppose to be the Miata fighter not a competitor with Mustangs and Camaros.

The problem is sales. The number of people who want a light weight (relatively low power) sports car is diminishing. If you look at the price of these cars (Miata/FT86) they are competing with some serious competition like Camaro, Mustang, etc in terms of price to performance.

I have been watching Miata sales for the ND, and it appears that the ND will be the lowest selling new model/rollout for the model line.

If Toyota wants to exceed expectations they need to address the power gap the car has with cars in the same price range, and even family haulers.

give it four doors and a turbo, maintain rwd and manual transmission. Yes it will gain weight, but four doors means adults that aren't ready or willing for camrys/accords become part of the market.

It's an interesting angle (four doors). It is a big reason I went from a BRZ to a four door vehicle that my kids can get in and out of easier.

For me, two things stand out. If you load up a Miata or FT86 you are boderline, if not past, a Mustang GT in terms of price. So either give these cars more power to better compete, or cut the price.
