![]() I replaced my broken gas cap and thought it would fix the code but it keeps coming back. I checked the hoses and found no issues and my filler neck is rust free. I found my charcoal canister had a bulge and and when I put pressure on it I can hear the charcoal inside moving. Is the canister bad and could this be whats causing my code?

![]() I'm battling a similar issue (p0442), I've replaced the fuel cap, both purge solenoids near the intake, checked the lines near the intake, and I am now moving to the canister area. From what I've read on the forums, if you see debris inside your lines near the canister, the canister could be shot. In my case, the canister seems to be intact; I'm now checking the Pressure Control Valve above the canister using the service manual. I can blow through the valve when when the solenoid is not powered and when the solenoid is powered so I think this might be my culprit.
Basically check the solenoids for the EVAP System first, then smoke machine it to see if its really leaking from a line. |

![]() Sounds like your canister is dead. Should not have a bulging canister nor be able to squeeze it and hear the charcoal moving around.
My original OEM canister shows no signs of what you are describing at 175,000 miles. If indeed you need a new one, PM me because I have a brand new canister still in the box for sale. |

![]() Yes, because it could be intermittent. I believe new OEM canisters come with the dump valve if that's what you're referring to.
I fought with a 2007 Forester constantly setting a p0456 code. Every time the code set, I found a different leak even after smoking the system with the new parts. After the most recent visit, I found no leaks but the ball on the smoke machine never flat-lined. I noticed a very small puff of smoke after removing the access panels coming from the center of the tank. After removing the rear subframe and dropping the tank down 6", I found the rollover valves leaking. I replaced 3 valves in total on top of the tank and the tank because it was starting to rust out and a few studs broke. Hooked the smoke machine up afterwards and the little ball flat-lined (no more leaks). I'd be willing to bet your canister is cracked since its bulged out. It's fairly easy to replace but if the problem persists, I'd recommend getting a smoke machine and smoke the system from the purge line under the hood that runs to the back of the car. Make sure you disconnect the vent hose from the canister and plug it to seal the system. |

My vent valve wasn't clicking when I had green test connectors connected. I wasn't sure if it would still click if it was just stuck. I would of thought I would of got a could for that too. I took one hose off and it was wet with gas. Last year when I did the swap I accidentally ran the return line to the evap so I figured my canister was the cause of the code. I surprised I didn't get this code until 6 months later when I went stage 2. I was thinking of getting a fog machine to smoke test it. |

![]() How does it fill with gas? Any issues the pump gun shutting off? I had issues with this issue before. Just pop the hose off and clean out the charcoal

![]() I checked the tank pressure using my scan tool and pressure was -.08 while driving and slowly lowered to 0 psi while I was off the throttle. At idle it was going up and I saw it go up to .15 psi when the code came up

![]() There is a pic at the end if the post. Just popped off the 90 degree hose and squeezed and tapped the hose until everything was out. There was a pool if charcoal after i was done. No issues for years even after went full build eng and tranny. Still had the stock evap system pushing 420whp.

![]() Found out that the vent doesn't click when the test connectors are connected but does when I apply power myself. It's getting 12v from the pig tail

![]() Would anyone have the routing for the two hoses on the canister (98 rs)? I've been trying to find a diagram so I can flush the hoses out but haven't found anything.

![]() Ok. From what I can tell the purge one goes to the front of the car. The other goes to the tank and a shut off valve. Would this be the hose on the pump assembly?

![]() There is a hose on the side of the tank that goes to the the shut off valve I believe. This is the hose that goes to the tank. I sprayed air into that hose and into the evap hose from the firewall. Then I took a blow dryer with a funnel and a hose used the blow dryer on cool mode and blew out the canister, There was a cup of gas in it. I took the car for a drive and turned it on / off to cycle the ecu to see if the code came back. So far so good no more code and the car feels alittle smoother.
