I drive an Evo so I don't hate Mitsubishi, but I'm really worried about the direction of the company (at least for MMNA) based on the horrendous concept cars released in the past years.

I expected this to happen years ago. To be honest, I am very surprised that they have made it this long.

Ditto.

I'm so glad we got our 2013 Legacy instead of the Kizashi someone was trying to convince us into getting just a couple months ago.

Autoblog; http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/07/m...kis-departure/

By now, you're surely aware that Suzuki is pulling out of the US market. It was a bit of a foregone conclusion to most who've been paying attention to the automotive realm, but it still sent a small shockwave through the industry. And one of the most oft-heard retorts goes something like this: "Next up: Mitsubishi."

It's easy to understand why many question Mitsubishi's existence in the States. After all, now that Suzuki is gone, Mitsubishi is the Japanese automaker with the fewest sales in America. Furthermore, the automaker's market share has dropped from .7 percent to just .4 percent after seeing sales fall 29 percent to 50,103 units through October.

In any case, Mitsubishi fans needn't worry. Speaking to Automotive News, Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko said, "We have no intention whatsoever of withdrawing from the US market." That's about as clear as clear can get. It's also worth mentioning that Gayu Uesugi was just named chairman of Mitsubishi Motors North America, and his main responsibility will be to revitalize the brand in the US.

Will Uesugi and Mitsubishi be successful in their push to sell more Mitsubishi models to Americans? Will a new Evolution be part of the plans? Excuse us as we shake up our Magic 8 Ball...

^Ouch. Assuming your dealer is not a stand alone Suzuki dealer, what are the other brands (new) your dealer sell(s)?

I just hope that if it does happen, it's after my car's 10-year powertrain warranty expires.

Mitsubishi and KIA.

We are currently battling with Mazda to get our franchise back, so hopefully that plays out. Not even sure if we will be a Suzuki parts and warranty centre

It probably didn't help Suzuki sales with Mitsubishi and Kia offering comparable warranties.

Ha ha. Don't worry dude they will probably outlast Mazda in the long run as the corporation makes so much money they essentually use North America as a loss leader simply for brand recognition. If they were really worried they would have pulled out five or six years ago.

haha

This made me mouth "WOW" at my desk.

That's kinda crazy.

Wonder what states were actually selling Suzukis? I mean, if they sold 21k cars this year, they must be selling somewhere.

That might be one of the big problems, The sell decent in certain areas, but they can't completely ignore the places they sell 15 a year (in terms of parts / service / warrantee)

American Suzuki Wins Approval of Loan for Dealer Shutdown

By Steven Church - Nov 7, 2012 3:27 PM MT

American Suzuki Motor Corp. (7269), the bankrupt U.S. distributor of Suzuki cars and motorcycles, won interim court approval to borrow as much as $45 million as it shuts auto dealerships and revamps motorcycle and boat sales.

The company’s parent, Suzuki Motor Corp., will loan the distributor money at a below-market interest rate of 3 percent above Libor, Debra Grassgreen, an American Suzuki lawyer, said today in federal court in Santa Ana, California. The loan has fewer restrictions than most bankruptcy credit agreements, known as debtor-in-possession loans, Grassgreen said.

The generous terms were designed “to have the case go smoothly,” Grassgreen said.

Suzuki Motor Corp. will try to avoid long court battles with its 216 dealers by offering cash payments within 10 days if they voluntarily scrap their franchise agreements. Various state laws normally protect dealers when auto manufacturers try to force them to shut down, Richard Pachulski, another American Suzuki lawyer, said in court.

On Nov. 5, Suzuki put the distributor into bankruptcy to end losses in the U.S. market, avoid the costs of tightening federal regulations and to shut down a sales network in which 69 percent of dealers sell fewer than five cars a month, according to company attorney James Stang.

The company will reorganize its motorcycle, boat and all- terrain vehicle business and continue selling through separate dealers, American Suzuki said in court papers.

Interim Authority

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Scott C. Clarkson gave the company interim authority to borrow the money. American Suzuki will return to court in the coming weeks to seek final approval to borrow as much as $100 million.

Clarkson declined to sign any order related to the company’s effort to persuade its auto dealers to cancel their franchises. The company doesn’t need court permission to sign such deals if it can get the dealers to go along, Clarkson said in court.

Should dealers agree to end their contracts by Nov. 30, Suzuki Motor would pay them half of what they’re owed by the distributor within 10 days, according to court documents. The dealers could later attempt to collect the rest of what they are owed through the bankruptcy process.

The company may owe dealers about $50 million, Pachulski said in court today.

Eric J. Snyder, an attorney for the dealers, said the offers may not be in his clients’ best interest. There may be as many as 4,000 Suzuki cars sitting unsold on lots around the country that the dealers have the legal right under state laws to send back to the manufacturer, he said.

The case is In re American Suzuki Motor Corp., 12-22808, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California (Santa Ana).

Looks like the fire sale is beginning. One dealer is increasing its discount by approximately $3000 on its advertised models... for example, a 2013 SX4 Sportback automatic that was $17k three weeks ago is now $14k (after a Dealer Discount around $4500).

2013 Suzuki Kizashi SE AWD automatic now under $19k.

[begin rant]
I'm also starting to question Suzuki's decisions regarding their motorcycle business in the States. They cancelled the SV650 while it still was a pretty solid seller (and a good all around bike - street, track, touring, ...- with stellar reliability).
Then, they offered the Gladius (SVF650) for a few years until it was cancelled as well.
They came out with a good entry level supermoto, the DRZ400SM, they sold it a few years then they cancelled it as well (again, a good seller and good performer).
In the mean time, they jacked up the price of the 650 V-strom (DL650); its price is simply outrageous (but, to Suzuki's defense, the bike is so good that people keep buying regardless...).
Recently, I noticed that the Gladius and the DRZ400SM are both back for MY2013.
But, then again, why would Suzuki cancel these 2 bikes in the first place?
[end rant]

In November, Suzuki's automotive division in announced that it would be shutting down its operations in the United States. On Thursday, December 20, American Suzuki Motor Corp successfully filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, in Santa Ana, California, winning permission to close its automotive operations, while re-organizing its motorcycle and boat businesses.
But that's not all that went down in the court as U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Scott Clarkson also approved Suzuki's request to borrow $50 million to import extra cars from Japan. Confused? Well, allow us to explain.

Suzuki saw its car sales jump 22 percent to 2,224 units in November, while the company's dealers reported that the sales are up in December as well, mainly due to big incentives and a seven-year warranty program, so the company decided to offer its dealers one last gift.

"When we told dealers, ‘We have one last chance,’ the dealers said, ‘Go get them,’" M. Freddie Reiss, Suuzuki's chief restructuring officer, told BusinessWeek. However, he added that, "No more cars are being manufactured for the U.S. market."

According to Reiss, this won't change Suzuki's decision to exit the car market in the U.S., as the company will only sell around 22,000 cars in the States this year, compared to 120,000 in 2007.

We passed.

I think we have 5 or 6 Kizashis and maybe a Grand Vitara left.
