It can be done ... I got some guy back in Singapore to help me with it. I heard that there are 8 leds in each Defi Gauge. But I have no idea how he did it, just know that he did ...

Scroll to the middle of the pages ... you will see them.

Jin - you are the FIRST person I've encountered who has managed to change the backlighting on the Defi gauges. I have the BF series, and have been keeping a sharp eye out for threads such as this. I read on another forum that the 2 screws on the back of the gauges are solely to loosen the "guts" inside the gauge, and that you need to pop the face off of the gauge to gain access to the LED's. Is there any way you can get more info. on how your friend in Singapore managed this? There would be a LOT of appreciative STi owners on this kinda info....plz let me/us know. Thanks!

Hey guys i tried it.

to pull the gauge apart u need to unscrew the 2 silver bolts then pry gently with a flat head screw driver. because it is aluminum u well c where the bend marks are. this is the only way to separte the two pieces as defi has crimped the face onto the holder.

anway taking the gauge apart i found 8 leds around the outer and 4 in the inner which are already the red colour. BUT these leds are wot ive neva seen before only bout 2mm in size and height.

i tried to put a red backing to turn the colour red howver it isnt as bright and dosent look rite. wot needs to be dun is to replace the leds i will post up a picture so we can source these then all we have to do is replace the leds.

Yeah, I wasn't there to watch him do it, as he did the change to all my gauges including the control link unit. However, he did tell me he replaced the all 8 leds. He has successfully changed the STI V8 Cluster to white too ... but there were repeatedly problems with the speedo or oil or something else not working correctly. Furthermore, the leds for the V 8 Speed Cluster were really difficult to get. So I chose the safer route. Thats all I really know ...

Yeah ... the company is called Espace. If your friend in Singapore knows anything about WRXes ... he will know that company. Its in Ubi ( near the driving center and another well known tunning shop called 'Jeep Chee' ). The guy whom I talked to is called Andy. He is the boss there. The guy who did the actual install was called Peter. Thats all I know.

Please, let's hope someone finds something. Those red Defis, I don't think they're going to come out until 4th quarter 04, that's what gruppe-s said anyway.
