So is there a way to get a matte finish that is smooth? I want a smooth "soft-touch" finish, but not shiny.

How smooth? If you put one or two coats on then let dry, come back and spray from far away. The partly-dry "mist" will matte down the first two coats, but leave a little bit of texture. You can do this with any spray paint, not just Dip It.
Or do the above technique with spray paint over Dip It, if you used the can. |

Plasti-Dip FTW. It's way more matte than these pics look (thanks cell phone cam).
Scuff, Prep Wipe, Dry, 2 coats primer, Dry, 4 or 5 light coats of Plasti Dip gets you... |

I just did my gauge pod, and it came out a little "hairy" (for lack of a better word). It seems just a little to rubbery to me (go figure huh). Did I put too much on? I did 4 light coats on the stock ATI pod. It does match SOOO much better now, just feels kinda weird, for all i know its supposed to be that way. For those that did the center consoles are they super rubbery as well? or smooth like plastic?

For all you guys who have painted your knob surrounds as well like me....
Flatirons Tuning (a vendor on here) is putting together a package of the 3 STi limited Black Auto climate control HVAC knob centers. Should be available in the next couple days. |

just wondering where exactly do you buy this and what does the can look like. i went to lowes today and couldnt find anything in the paint section that said plasti dip on it. also what grit sand paper do you use on this and do you have to use primer? somebody said just use alcohol pads and dont sand and you dont need to prime it.

as for the button sanded the silver paint off with 150 grit, then 600 then rubbing compound. the trim i just took out any imperfections using the 150, was thinking about polishing down to a mirror finish but i was tired so i called it at that. not sure about fitment. i don't remember what the shifter was like in my friends wrx, but it is a 05 sti if that helps? |

Flat black, white lettering, and with a bit of a rubberized texture to it almost like that of the plasti-dip itself. WAY more legit looking than the decal overlays I've seen in person, where you can see the little bit of silver still around the lettering. I'd never seen the STi limited centers in person, but now I'm confident that they're teh uber awesome. Totally ordering myself a set. They should be up on their website Thursday, but I'm sure you could call Jon Cooley over there and he could set you up before then, if you really wanted. |

Here is my plasti-dipped dash. I did 6 coats each piece. 4 from about 12" away then the last 2 from about 18" away. Came out with a nice pebbly, matte finish. Also my "JDM" style hazard button. Sanded down to the red, then rubbing compound and 3 coats of wax.
