n00b help. '13 WRX burning smell/worse?
So stupidly, I got a car wash before I left on vacation. Bad news was, it dropped to 12 degrees f that night and I left the parking brake on. The next morning, I couldn't move the car, forward or back, it was stuck in my driveway. After a lot of revving and gassing, it jolted and started moving, not without making what my brother described as a loud sickening crack sound and a lot of burning smell. Is this something I need to worry about when I return from vacation?

The cracking sounds was most likely the pads becoming unstuck from the rotor.
The smell .... how much and how long did you slip the clutch? |

Maybe a good 30 seconds, a minute at most. I mean since I'm under warranty still, is it something I should bring to the dealership?

I wouldn't worry about it. My Impreza makes a melting-vacuum-cleaner-belt smell when I need to slip the clutch, so I'd say it's normal.

so your angry at me because
1 you washed your car in winter 2 you didn't check the weather forecast 3 you probably pulled that ebrake up by ALOT so pads got stuck to rotors, very securely 4 you don't know how to disengage it without revving the crap out of a cold engine 5 you didn't read the section of the manual about parking in cold temperatures 2 options pour hot water on them or heat them up with something I would only use the tourch and hammer method if I drove a semi truck so hot water method for your car. You could also have tried one of those portable heat lamps, hair dryer, etc. |

No, I'm pointing out that your trolling a person that is a self proclaimed newbie that made a silly mistake, thus your post only unnecessarily points out what I've already admitted. Furthermore, I really had to move my car and I really had no options in terms of the car wash nor had a place to store my car because of circumstances beyond my control (for starters, I'm currently in Japan for the next few weeks with no one to care for my car while I'm gone and I'm not leaving it a mess while I'm gone).
Tl;dr: why are you posting just to embellish on what I made obvious about my idiocy? Or does it make you feel better to troll new owners? |

So trolling is equated to pointing out that you should read the manual and use common sense instead of beating on your new car. Hmm you could have even googled for the answer. Yep unamused

Here's some more unnecessary context of the situation. -I had about a minute to move my car as it was blocking a family member who had to leave on emergency, so I really didn't have the option to go inside my complex and Google the answer. That also leaves waiting several minutes for my car to warm out of the question. -I don't have a hair dryer or heaters. I don't live in convenience where we generally need things we rarely use. -My falling asleep pre-maturely on the couch after work (before I can suggest switching cars with my family member before I fell asleep to the car freezing overnight) didn't help. -I admittedly never thought about hot water but since this is the first time (again, see beginner) this has happened and I really had to move my car, I was in quite a bit of a panic. -I washed the car because I didn't want to leave the caked in salt while I left the country for several weeks, but didn't have the time to get it washed otherwise (heavy work schedule). That's just the tip of the iceberg but I figured rather than tell a boring background and possibly what some may interpret as a sob story, I'd just come forward, admit it was an idiotic newbie mistake, and ask if there was anything I needed to worry about so I don't stress out several thousand miles away for a few weeks. So despite that, you continue to basically are implying how idiotic I was? So I don't have the right to call trolling? Good to know that there really is no place on the internet for good ol' fashioned help (because even Google yields Yahoo! Answers which is always 100% reliable!) |
