Default Doing a ver 6 ra swap in 97, 98 or 99 imperza L questions!

What to do about there being no hood scoop. I dont want a front mount is there a hood replacement?

To all those that have done this swap how is the power.

Also could you post some pics.

Ralispec is doing the swap as soon as I find the car. I have my eyes on a white 99L

Thanks everyone.

Buy a new hood. Either from a RS or get a Aluminum hood or a CF hood

You could always do an air to water intercooler. This would provide you with ample cooling and no need to buy another hood.

If you can get a complete drivetrain from this RA.. including the whole rear end, why not find an old 1.8L FWD model and have them convert it, it will save you a ton of money.

Thumbs up

good job keeping the L flat hood...i've had that idea knocking around in my head for quite some time...too bad someone beat me to it.

from what i found, an air-to-water intercooler from a legacy turbo should work just fine with the stock hood. i've seen them go in the classifieds in really nice shape for $200-250. of course there is always the front mount, but then you're talking serious $$$.

good luck!! let us know how it goes. if you need a FWD L donor car, i'll give you mine...provided i can use your WRX during the week, and get the L on weekends...

and usualy much much cheeper

annnnd the later you get the more expensive the service manual will be 93 service manual =1 book ... 99 service manual= 7 books

i will be doing a similar swap very soon into a 1995 2door L. I'm buying either a wrecked rex (heh) or a complete drivetrain. its being done by SXPi in san diego very soon.

I plan on doing a swap in the future into a MY96 impreza, but it doesn't have a hood scoop, and I don't want one. I plan on using the black R series front mount IC that Cobb Tuning sells for the WRX, and then I will probably get the pipes powdercoated black. This way you won't even be able to see anything unless you look really really hard, and I can keep it all sleeper

I would be willing to bet that you could get it to fit our cars with a little modification, which FMIC's always require to get in anyways. I would call Cobb and explain your situation to them, and see what they have to say

Bleh..

I got a lovely HKS FMIC for my STi V RA conversion.. that "R" series unit looks tiny by comparison!

Quick info for all you guys considering swaps:
1. However much money you think or are TOLD it will cost, you better have at LEAST 50% more available, no question.

2. Take all estimated completion dates with a pound of salt

I'm still waiting on my swap, but Rallispec has "only" had the car since March 2. Now we're waiting on Motec to deliver the ECU.
Anyday now!

I am also now considering a swap.

Some questions for those that have done it already. How has the reliability been? Check engine light problems? Who did the swap. Cost (final) and what was included.

Thanx

I have done 4 USDM EJ20 swaps now. All run fine. No Cels. Great drivability.

mrtrex: What all did you buy for your swap? And how much did you get it for? PM or email me if you don't wanna post it for some reason. I would of already had my engine in BUT a few people on here got scammed!!!! So now I have to build that money lost back up and save again. Yeah have you looked into buying an older Impreza? Mine cost me under 2 grand, not wrecked clean title, overall very damn good deal inside and out!!!

I agree on the + 50% thing, well maybe its a bit low.

The fee's and other BS on this end added a good $300+ to teh cost of getting my STi driveline.

all the misc BS I am going to have to do to get it to run is also adding up. Hell just putting fluids in the car is costing plenty.

Now I am putting it in a car where ALOT more stuff has to be custom than the impreza/legacy swaps, but you should always plan on SOMETHING not going right.

Everything Cacophony said is true. Prepare for it to take longer and cost more $$$ than you plan initially, guaranteed. I don't know anyone who did a conversion who was an exception to this rule, except maybe one or two highly skilled mechanics.

Also, it's vitally important that you source the engine/front clip through a reputable source, like Possum Bourne, MRT, Perrin, or someone else who is proven trustworthy. A newer STi front clip will cost a mint, but will probably be in best shape, and yield better results. But remember, you're still buying USED parts, and the possibility that an unforseen problem may exist with those parts is both scarey and real.

I have 10k miles on my swap with no probs, although I did throw a CEL at 8900 miles. My front clip had ~50k on it to begin with, too. As far as the CEL is concerned, I have a stand alone engine management (Power FC), so I have no clue what the CEL is about, but everything seems fine, anyway.

Wow, another 50%. I hope you guys are kidding! Where is this "extra" fee coming from and why does it seem that it's a foresight?

lol!

Annointed and I are absolutely not kidding. Out of the thousands of I-club people who say "I wanna do a swap..." well, he and I *actually* put up the cash and went through with it.

The extra money comes from all of the extra parts that you had no idea that you needed.. but are nonetheless important. I bought a brand new STi V RA engine.. but if you buy used stuff, you better be prepared, cause you may be replacing parts before you even begin the process.

Also, swaps take time. I've spent so much time worrying wondering and planning this car out, that I'm seriously burnt out on the whole project. With a project of this scope, burning out halfway through is a distinct possibility, so be prepared and make sure that you have people who will not let you quit! You don't want to end up with a halfway complete project car and a garage full of parts that you'll never use.

Well the shipping company in the US charged me $125 is BS fees
The "dock" the crate was at was another $60
the Customs Broker was $45
A uhaul trailer because the crate was 1" too tall to fit in the explorer $25

Oil for tranny and rear diff $50
LHD pedal box, clutch master cyl, gas pedal, throttle cable, rear diff that works with my car $150

And more.

Still need to do alot more including the whole exaust after the turbo, tranny mount, shortend driveshaft, throttle cable mount, etc, etc, etc.

Of course my swap needs more done because no cars of its era came with a EJ series motor.

very true...this needs to be copied/pasted into it's own thread and stickied.

yes, you can do these swaps "cheaply" ($2K), but having seen the ramifications first hand, i'm still sitting on the parts i've accumulated thus far. i have a very nice, capable car as is...i'm not too keen on jumping into something half-assed, being broke, and then riding the bus to work for the next year.

something to think about...

so until i can hand blank checks to rallispec, i'm moving VERY slowly on this.

Well, I had issues of many parts needed that weren't planned on. I couldn't use the jdm climate control, so I had to fork out $400 to get my AC working, plus my pedal assembly had to be swapped to accomodate the jdm parts, the jdm radiator was too big, so new parts were needed so it would fit, I got a TD04 instead of a TD05 on my engine, so I had to buy a second hand TD05 from New Zealand. Shipping for the front clip burned me bad and taught me a lesson to get quotes in writing, as I was told it would be "around $500" COD, but unforseen circumstances made it $1200 when it arrived, and they said it either I pay up, or my shipment is destroyed I got them down to $1010, then to $805, and called that good.

Christoph, I think the jdm route is the main reason for us saying have 50% more cash on hand, just in case. You seem to have the USDM WRX swaps you're doing down to a science, so maybe this doesn't apply as much.

This is certainly making me think.
Yes, I think this is still the way to go but I am definately not going to rush this. I will most probably have Lachute Subaru do the swap instead of attempt this myself.

They even have a few engines in stock!!

I think I worte the book on the real costs of an Sti swap not something I am proud of BTW (some serious check wiritn gwent on!), but glad that I was among the first in the country to do it, so the rest of the people know what they are really in for.

My swap took forever to do (it was among Rallisepc's first ones, and I couldn't lay up my own car in our shop for that long, plus I had no desire to do the wiring), cost way more than expected (about 45% more due to a variety of things), but in the end I was happy...and when the car put down its "new" numbers, I was all smiles.....

and then the new owner makes it from NY to the southwest forget what state0 in 2 days without insurance (yikes!), and no problems....

I would, and will, do it again though, but this time with an early AWD sedan
