Default MY03/04 Forester Tire Sizes

I've seen a few posts where people have put 225/55R16s on their Foresters. Granted there are few selections in this size, will 235/55R16s fit? It'd seem to be a 1:1 match (or close enough) for the originals, much like going from 205/55R16 to 225/50R16 is on the WRX. Just curious.

If application of 235/50/16 were available, it might fit but you may need a higher wheel offset of atleast 50 or maybe 52.

I'm one of the guilty parties, running 225/55 NT450s on my XT. On paper the 235/55 comes out exactly the same height, but you need to remember that different tire manufacturers will vary their precise sizes compared to other manufacturers. The only way to really be sure is to do what I did: get a 225 and a 235 of whatever tire you're looking at, then set them next to your stock tires and see which one is a closer match. In my case, the 225 was much closer so that's why I went with it.

Will the 235 fit? Again, it depends on the tire manufacturer. I expect some of the "smaller" 235s might not rub... but since there are so few options you may not get so lucky. Still, all is not lost: I quite like how my 225s look on the car. The sidewall is practically identical to stock, and while the total tire width isn't much different these NTs do put substantially more treadwidth to the pavement.

Did you put them on the stock 6.5"-wide wheels? How wide (225? 235?) a tire can be satisfactorily mounted on a 6.5" rim?

Go to the tire manufacturer's web site for this information. Yokohama and Falken, for instance, both have suggested wheel widths for their tires in various sizes. 225 or 235 is going to be at the recommended upper limit for 6.5" wheels.

Yes, I did--I frugally decided against buying more wheels. While the tires are overall a little wider than the stock Yokes, they still sit just fine on these wheels... and the actual treadwidth (footprint) is substantially wider than stock. I'll have to see if I can get a picture or two for you guys.
