Is there anything I should know before I go out and buy a 12guage and clay pigeons and start shooting?

What kind of land are you going to shoot on?

When I'm not at the local Skeet field at the gun club, I mostly shoot on pastureland.

You can get a hand thrower at most places - including WalMart - and IMHO they are much more fun to shoot from.

The manual/automatic traps you can buy are fun and easy, but each shot can be learned relatively easily. The hand throwers make each shot more random. Like a real bird.

As far as guns go, you can go all out and get a nice over/under setup for a little over a grand, or you can just pick up 'ol relaible - the Remington 870 12 guage pump. This is what I'd reccomend since you're just getting into it, but I think 20 guage is more fun and challenging.

BTW, prepare to get hooked. I don't have a friend that I've introduced this sport to who hasn't loved it.

Yeah, he might get some decent advice from that thread, although most of the guys there are buying shotties for either home defense or... tacticool home defense.

Yeah get a hand thrower. They are more fun, and only $5. Blasting clays is VERY satisfying. Oh and get a "bore snake" to clean the gun afterwards, quick and easy.

This.

These significantly cut down on cleaning time. Although, I don't think I've EVER cleaned my 870.

Find a gun that shoulders easily. My Benelli Nova fits me great and works good for skeet, but most people don't like a pump gun for skeet shooting.

I have an old Savage double barrel (side by side) which is pretty fun to shoot skeet with, but I'd rather have an over under.

That place is a mess. And you have horrible form by the way. You should try transitioning your weight to your forward foot instead of leaning back. You'll find it easier to acquire the target and follow through on shots.

OP, are you looking into shooting clays on your own, or at a range? It's totally different in my opinion. There are lots of variations as well, be it skeet, or trap, 5 stand, etc.

Sporting Clays > Trap or Skeet. Seriously, try trap and try skeet, then go try sporting clays. You will not want to go back to trap or skeet after sporting clays.

Only you can answer that question for yourself. Personally, I think I do a tad better with an over/under than I do with my 870 pump or my 1187 semi-auto.

Trap is the easiest to do when getting started. Ona real trap field, the targets fly away from you starting about 16 yards in front of you, and will exit the trap house flying out at angles up to about 45° from center. With actual trap on a trap field, there are 5-6 different shooting positions along an arc ~16 yards behind the thrower (in the trap house). The angle the target exits the house will be more or less severe depending on which position you're shooting from. There are 25 targets per person in a round of trap.

Get a gun that has removable/interchangeable choke tubes. You'll probably want a tighter choke so as to be able to break targets at 30-50 yards or so. I dunno. I have a Full Trap tube in my gun all last year, and I did fine. My understanding is that it is tighter than a regular Full choke. I have 1 or two that are even tighter than the full trap.

For getting started in the sport,a field-grade gun will serve you just fine. I learned on basic Reington 870 and 1100 models. Now I shoot with Remington 870 TC Trap, which was a trap version of the Wingmaster at one time.

Typically, one uses #7-#8 shot for clays shooting. Our club does not permit anything larger than #7.5 to be used.

Now, if you are going to be throwing your own target from a bench or hand thrower, the target will be launched right beside you. The fancy choke tubes will play less of a role here, as the targets will be closer to you. You'll probably be able to break more targets, too, and you'll feel really good about yourself and become hopelessly addicted to the sport in no time.

Other shotgun sports.

Skeet: In Skeet, the shooter shoots at two targets that always launch from the same places: A low house on the right, and a high house on the left. Rather than targets going out and away from you like in trap, the Skeet targets go more side-to-side. The challenge in Sket is shooting at the target from a bunch of different positions around and inside a big arc.

Sporting Clays: Sporting clays usually follows a course in which there are different shooting stations at which shooter shoots multiple targets. The targets fly and bounce at a multitude of different trajectories. Shotgunners that shoot multiple disciplines often claim Sporting Clays as the most fun.

Thats what I know off the top of my head.
