Speaking to the US market, I wonder if Audi could successfully pull off the launch of such a car. With recent ads focused on "replacing your Mercedes Benz" and showing husbands speeding down a residential street (that commercial really bugs me), value and responsibility aren't high on their list of priorities. Audi and value are two words that just don't go together, and I can't see this thing being anything but overpriced. I'll be watching, though.

That looks like a stock photo of an Audi concept from 15 years ago....
I REALLY do not think that this A2 will look like that. (I hope so at least) |

I went to their UK site and that A2 is the OLD model (which isn't even sold anymore). This news story is about the next-gen model. http://www.audi.co.uk/audi/uk/en2/used_cars.html |

I don't see Audi bringing the A2 to the states, the A3 is a hard sell as it is.
It might do well in Canada though. |

Audi's been boggling my mind with their prices for a little while now. It almost seems to me like they are intentionally pricing their equivelent cars higher than other luxury marques to try to raise their brand image through sheer price. To encourage the, "If it's that expensive. it must be good...", mentality if you will. Value = Zero. Last edited by Skunkers; 12-02-2008 at 02:43 AM. |

There will always be a certain brand of people who see a higher price and think it signifies a higher value. As long as they bring over a VW polo for the states I won't care much. It just boggles my mind how much of a premium you pay for the A3 over a GTI. They are essentially the same cars and the VW comes with so much more and just is so much cheaper.

Since I own an A3 and a GTI I can tell you they are remarkably different.THe GTI is stilla hell of a value though.

What do you consider the differences to be? On paper there don't seem to be that many. Could you PM me if you don't feel like mucking up this thread cause they are still on my list of if I ever come into a little money cars.
So supposedly the Audi will look something like this concept: Last edited by Chuck Jones; 12-03-2008 at 02:12 AM. Reason: Pix |

I am comparing the base GTI with DSG to a mid level A3 with DSG, leather and big sunroof.
Starting with the interior, everything is better in the A3. The gaps are tighter, materials are nicer and the tactical feel is higher. The seats aren't as well bolstered but the S line adds more aggressive seats. The A3 and GTI ride on the same wheelbase but the A3 is somewhat longer yet it feels much longer than the 2-3 inches it has on the GTI, but not in a bad way. The A3 is also much lower and subsequently feels wider (though I don't think it is.) The GTI obviously rides stiffer but again I think the S Line takes the A 3 up to similar feel. The DSG in the Audi seems to slip the clutches more than the GTI and this is in a bad way. It was disconcerting a few times when trying to go up a slight incline form a stop in the A3. I guess it is to give it a more luxury feel and make it less abrupt but it didn't feel great. When you are getting on both cars the feel the same but the GTI has an intake noise pipe plumbed into the cabin to bring some aggressive sounds. I like it, some people swap the A3 a pipe into their GTI's to quiet it down but it isn't offense to me at all. Obligatory Pics |

Nice pair of cars. Thanks for the comparison. It's these little details, like the clutch, that you can only get from real owners.
I remember going for a test drive in a GTI with the GF. You could really hear all the noises from the engine and she asked if that was our car since the windows were down. I said yes, thinking it would be a problem, but turned out she liked it. We both really liked the car but went subaru instead. Again, very nice cars you've got there. |

Ugh double post. Well... I do think the one thing Audi will have going against it in a Mini match-up is it's poor reputation for reliability. Mini's rep is rock solid and I think that means alot to the Yuppies who gobble these cars up.

I don't know why you think Mini has a rep for quality. It's not the impression I have and is certainly not back up by the people that measure those things. They are literally next to last in JD Powers IQS, lower than even Land Rover. The only worse brand is Jeep. They are also in the bottom 1/3 in the VDS. Audi on the other hand is tied for 10th in the IQS, well above average and is about average in the VDS study.
