![]() The return of the straight 6 to Chrysler.... wow. Used to be the staple of engines back in the 60s and 70s. With modern fuel controls, DI, etc... these can be really fun. Will not be sad to see the V6 die off.

![]() The old inline 6 were damn stout engines. I wouldn't be surprised if these end up making more power than the Ford ecoboost while being same level of reliability. I am interested to see how they perform fuel economy wise. Maybe I was under the wrong impression but I thought typically inline 6 gets worse than v6 mpg's.

![]() Inline 6 used to get slightly less than V6, yes. However, that shouldn't be an issue with DI these days.
The big switch from I6 to V6 was for packaging (both vertical and length, along with FWD transfer cases) and crash testing. With better safety structures these days, and higher hoodlines are a thing (no more sloping to bumper), and a move to more RWD cars again... you have a little more room to play with. This could be good news... sad thing is, not many new drivers even remember how stout and reliable I6s were compared to the V6s. We had a Volare in the fam with the straight 6... 200+k miles "just add oil". I also had an '84 Maxima, brother had an '82. The 84 was the last year of the RWD I6 Maxima (the last real 4DSC). For '85 they went V6 FWD. --kC |

![]() Sounds like a peach of an engine. Those old slant 6 motors were stout indeed. My parents bought a '71 Valiant new and put about 115k miles on it. They sold it to my baby sitter who put another 150k on that engine before it finally threw a rod in 1985. She took that car through every single one of the lower 48 states as well as Mexico and Canada. Never needed anything but tune ups, tires and a few clutches. You did have to hold the shifter on the steering column in place when driving in second gear for about the last 7 years of that cars life, though.

![]() The 5.7 gets as good mileage as most 6 cyl so go for the 5.7 for now till they work bugs out.
I had a REM 1500 5.7 and it had way more power and better mileage than the 6 cyl Chevy Colorado I drive now for work. |

Rumors are a base engine HP of 360 and a HO version topping out around 525HP with a version also somewhere in the middle. |

![]() Pentstar V6 always straining to keep up. Just does not have power or torque to feel comfortable drive in Grand Cherokee and way too anemic for the Ram 1500.

![]() You know I have the pentastar in my Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. I have always felt it was a very adequate and decent engine. Sure it is not a Hemi, but it moves the GC down the road quite well. Gets decent mileage, and is really smooth and relatively quiet. It is not a superstar engine, but I would not say it feels strained. I am at sea level though, so maybe my opinion is a bit location limited.
