I live in Calif, so for emission I did the following. This may not apply if your state has different emission requirements:

1)tune the JDM ECU to compensate for US premium 91 OCT fuel, catless downpipe
2)Leave the JDM ECU in the car, take off catless downpipe, replaced with stock downpipe
3)Go to emission inspection
4)Get my SMOG certification
5)Replace stock downpipe back to aftermarket downpipe.

I use Shell Rotella T6 oil

The swap is OBDII compliant, the ECU is read through the OBD port. As long as all the wiring is hooked up (AVCS included), the SMOG station should read everything as "ready". IF no CEL, and the tailpipe numbers are clean, I don't see why it wouldn't pass.

I thought the jdm ecu had to be switched because the tests obd2 thing wont work on jdm ecu's

What about bar compliance?

When I went to inspect my car in New York, where I live, the DOT machine wouldn't communicate with my Jdm ecu. I had to swap in the usdm ecu and go for a 48 mile drive keeping it under 60 mph to ready it for inspection. I had the stock jdm down pipe and stock usdm ecu map, passed inspection. Next time I'm going to just swap back to the usdm ecu and keep the aftermarket catless down pipe and see what happens. Not concerned about visual inspection, they don't really look for stuff like that here, thankfully.

It really depends on the state inspection computers.

CT passed me back in 03 on the JDM ecu, fully catless on their state dyno and inspection computer. Things may have gotten stricter.

AZ the state computer kept dropping communication but all other tests were readable and up to compliance, so i passed all 3 inspection times over the years.

TX, the state computer kept dropping but would not even run a single test against the system. Inspector was puzzled even his hand held obd2 scanner showed everything looked good but officially could not run me through the rest of the inspection.

NJ last year, state computer showed all my tests were fine but a few criteria they were looking for did not report back, so they failed me. Tried again with the force readiness bit on, still failed. Had to use a usdm ecu to pass.

I forgot to mention that when I went for my SMOG inspection here in Calif, I did run into trouble with the SMOG equipment not being able to communicate with the JDM ECU. I've always been told that the inspection computer would recognize JDM ECU's. When the technician couldn't pick up the signal (the RPM signal was what he was after), he simply attached a RPM detector gizmo to the windshield and it picked up the engine RPM right away. Then he proceeded to put the car on for test, one at idle and one at ~2500RPM.

I figured it was due to the OBD port being loose, after so many uses from attaching/reattaching the Cobb AP. Now that you guys bring it up, perhaps it was due to the inspection computer not being able to communicate with the JDM ECU. Nevertheless, to be on the safer side, the next time I will be bring the USDM ECU (with TGV codes forced to readiness), my stock downpipe reinstalled for inspection.

If you're referring to my last post, yes, I will sticky it to the first post of my thread.

I've added some NASIOC links on the first post that helped me with my swap. I will try to update the list with what I think will help with your swap.

im not sure if this was answered. From the catalogs that I am aware of, the ej207 stock timing belt is the same as the USDM sti, however the recommended change interval is sooner on the ej207 motor. The interval is around 70k miles vs 115k miles IIRC. For a more accurate change interval milage refer to the EJ207 owners thread. I use a Gates on mine.

The sticker on top of my timing belt cover says (In Japanese): Change Timing belt 100K. So that translates to roughly 62500 miles.

For those who are struggling with the ECU pins, like I was, I wrote up a quick guide with pictures on how to depin the ECU plugs.

Link -----> How to repin the ECU plugs. I've also added it to the list on the first post.

So ive been doing quite a bit of searching and i can't seem to find any place that sells the Ej207's? Is it worth doing that full swap or getting a V7 Head mated to a built 2.5?

You haven't done that much research. There are multiple Vendors here on Nasioc that sell JDM engines. You could search ebay and the classifieds here as well.

Full swap is ideal.

To give you an idea of HP, I have an 04 wrx swap with a V7. My mods are:

Catless exhaust
ID1000 injectors
Stage 2 OS tune

When I got the tune we did an airboy dyno on it and it was about 250 WHP. I don't know how accurate the airboy is though. Also I'm only 19 PSI as I still have the WRX 5 speed trans and I don't want to break it.....yet.....

you only made 250? i made 302 to the wheels and 347 at the crank with no upgrades other than the jdm v7 engine and an invidia race n1.

I'm at 340 AWftlb on my V9 with the 5 speed and have had it that way for more than a year.
I have numerous road dyno pulls in 3rd, for tuning.
If you don't race it, the 5 speed can hold.
