Me and some friends were thinking about that for some time, but then realized that in this sue happy society we wouldn't be able to afford the insurance for the business; that and most of the dumb ****s working on their cars will simply damage or ruin the equipment/shop.

THis is how he Air Force Bases have their shops, when I was growing up, you payed like 5 bucks an hour and you got a lift, and an entire toolbox full of craftsman tools. You also had an expert mechanic on staff to help if you hit a snag.

Those shops had storage bays for long term projects. It was quite nice.

Scrappy - they still have it that way at just about every AFB I've been to.

I loved those places, but alas, I no longer live on an AFB installation...

Good idea, however as someone else stated, insurance to cover for screw-ups and fails would be astronomical. Plus there are to many lazy bastages out there to make this worth it...

+1. You can't beat the Auto Skills Center. I've put in many of man hours at the Auto Skills Center. A few that I have been to were so poorly managed that they lost track of the time you were on the lift so that means several hours for the price of 2 or 3.

For those of use with Nazi like Home Owners Associations it's a terrific idea, but you're right how the insurance would be high and John Q Public loves breaking **** that doesn't belong to them. I'd imagine a membership based entrance to cover insurance and keep track of who's in which bay using which tools would deter the less reputable customers.

This Idea already exists in Westland Michigan. Not sure if they're still open or not though.

My Senior Thesis at Business School was starting and marketing a business just like this. My professor to this day still asks if i am going to go through with it. Don't have to worry about suing if you have them sign a consent form.

True. I remember them saying they stopped because they spent so much time helping clueless customers they became more like a cheap full-service garage.

I asked my dad about these a while back
he said they used to have a few in our area but I haven't been able to find any... It's a fantastic idea though.

I remember I found one of these in Calgary when I lived there. Would definitely be nice to have one in town as it would make some work so much easier for a small out lay of cash.

This was my idea in my marketing class. I really wanted it to become a reality, but just thinking about the liability makes my head hurt.
