Living with an External WasteGate
Getting an external waste gate is a good idea for larger turbos and an atmosphere dump sure sounds cool. But for those who have it, and drive with it daily, does it get tiring and loud? The atmosphere dump part.
I realize you can plumb back in but the atmosphere dump is pretty cool sounding. I don't own on hence the question. I wonder if it would get old. Sure sounds good. Visceral and all.

If you want to attract the attention of every cop within a 1 mile radius vent your wastegate atmospherically. That's my take on it. I'm more worried about unwanted cop attention than anything else...as if a big wing, gold wheels, a hood scoop, and a loud exhaust weren't enough..

external dumps aren't too bad for daily drivers. I had one on my daily driven turbo gsr for a while. As long as you're driving "normal" and not flooring it it'll stay shut

Exactly! External dump is almost as over rated as turbo lag.. It is not that bad. If you are racing who cares if the car gets loud for a few seconds, it isnt like you drive around always above 14psi(or whatever spring you are running) Just dont be retarted and you will never have a run in with the law with the external.. There was a guy that lived near me that had an EVO with a 3037 and a EW on it...and an RFL exhaust.
You could hear him coming from a LONG way off, especially at night....miles away, that is....way too loud. |

If it was "normal" drivin it wasnt the wastegate.. I have a 3037 on my car with external, and under "normal" drivng my car is about as quiet as a wrx with a borla hush or evo 2.. Dave- |

love my external dump'd 44mm for daily driving...and it's not like you drive at 14psi+ all day long, I don't hear mine most of the time unless I'm getting on the interstate

It's probably the same opinion as I had about a 100% atmos BOV. It was fun if I was out ripping around town or with my buddies, but annoying in rush hour traffic.

Ah sure. It only dumps under boost. Mine makes a full bar with waste gate only on the AVC-R. So in that mode I would never hear it. I assume as the waste gate does dump it does get louder with more boost. That would makes sense. Right?

Not to hijack, but would I benefit from an external wg? I have an sr55 with all supporting mods and a dr725 will be installed later this spring. I have the aps v2 tmic now and I have the 725 at home, but it's cool enough here in the desert at this time so my tmic is ok. Thanks in advance for any input.

Yeah, that is a big turbo. I would. If your boost is stable and controllable then it is not a huge deal. With race gas some have seen 20-40 whp improvement with EX WG on the 2.0 engine. If you run high boost and race gas you may benifit for sure. On 91 octane, ehh not sure. But it is cool!
