Been using the SPT intake for over a year now and am very happy with it. Be sure if you go this route to buy the heat shield as well.

on the other hand, unless you're pushing more than 400 to the wheels the stock one is the best. |

I dissagree with your comment. Just because you can extract 400hp out of a car with a stock intake, doesn't mean that there is no benefit to a good CAI on a car with less power. Carlos |

If you have any different evidence that it will back up your claims I would be more than willing to listen, but it would have to be actual dyno graphs with just the CAI and the tune being different. What's bad about these is people usually do not get a tune afterwards and then wonder why their fuel trims are 10% skewed. In my experience both tuning cars and watching cars be tuned all a CAI does it make the car more of a PITA to tune because you have to be more conservative on timing/boost etc because you have to worry excessively about heatsoak. The few CAI's that were mentioned are absolutely horrible for the wrx. Sit in traffic for five mins and watch your COLD air intake become a HOT air intake, and then watch your car start to pull loads of timing. Sorry, I just hate the CAI argument because it's pointless but five points to ya there sparky. OP spend your money on something useful, like bigger sways or a shifter kit, this is worthless. |

Shadow, based on your post, I don't see how anyone could not question your "tuning experience". Only certain intakes are of questionable design/value. And if you're "tuning" cars and only getting 1-2 whp, then I suggest you leave that to those more experienced. Last edited by Xigent; 09-09-2008 at 12:37 AM. |

04 WRX Several 02-03 WRX's 04 Sti 05 Sti 07 Sti 06 wrx 07 wrx There are a few gaps in there but with my experience an intake which is not stock is not only annoying to have to tune around, but will actually skew the MAF readings a ton because most of the manufactures do not make a CAI specifically for each year even though the MAF for several of those cars is completely different. There are 3 different cars I've tuned with CAI's, the cobb, an AEM and a the SPT. I don't repeat anything, I am basing my statement on qualitative data that I have. The cars that have a CAI as opposed to a stock intake DONOT whatsoever pull any harder than their stock counterparts. The only time the car with the CAI pulled any harder was when it was an 07 sti with a GT35r, all of the other times the car on a buttdyno pulled maybe another 1-2 somtimes 3-4MAX WHP from a CAI. Please post anything you see different, I'd be happy to listen. Remember though, qualitative data only. Not my friend's sister's dog's wrx...... |

Intakes don't give incredible gains (esp not like they advertise they do). But just because it doesn't make it pull like a freight train it doesn't meant wasn't beneficial. You're not gonna notice a 5-10 whp gain. The less restrictive filter alone is good for more than what you are saying you can get. If you're gonna give numbers to support your argument, qualitative information isn't what's going to win it for you. You need the solid numbers.

As an average guy, non-expert WRX owner, I decided not to get an intake because absolutely nobody who seemed to know what they were talking about said I'd get enough gain to feel. Some said maybe 5 hp at the most, others said I might even lose hp. That left the only reason to get one as that I might like how it looked when I popped the hood, and it wasn't worth it just for that.
Give credit where credit is due. Subaru did a very good job designing the stock intake and it's hard to improve on. Companies sell intakes for the same reason they sell strut tower bars - not because they improve performance, but because people want to buy fairly inexpensive mods that are easy to install and look impressive. My only experience with an intake was the K & N filter I put into the hacked stock filter box in my old Ford ZX2. Maybe, just maybe, I gained less than 5 hp in the 500 rpm before redline. Wasn't at all worth the $50 I spent for the filter. The intake also sounded better before I cut it up. |

I had an injen CAI and it ran fine no problems. I live in washington state so it rains ALOT!. I took a hacksaw and transformed the cold air intake into a short ram intake. Everything runs great no problems thus far been running strong for 1 year 4 months
