Default Quick question on tire width and ride quality

If I go from a 235/45/17 tire to a 245/45/17, will the ride be affected because there is more "contact area", thus the car/suspension will feel choppier - right? I am switching to a winter/all season/non track setup of 17x9s and thinking of going with Kumho ECTSA ASXs. But I want to keep the the ride quality as close as to stock as possible.

Thanks for any info -
John

Going to a taller tire generally means better ride quality (more sidewall), but it's VERY dependent on the actual tire- some tires are very soft, some very stiff, some in between- obvioulsy tire choice is going to pay a major role in ride "quality".

A wider tire is more likely to tramline, but can be as (or even more) cushy than a narrowier tire.

Thanks Big Sky, I guess it could go either way then. I'm just trying to decide if I should stick with the oem size, or go a little wider. And if so, if the ride will be compromised.

Big sky gave you your answer...it depends more on what tire you get than what size it is...any all season is going to be sloppier than your stock tires.

sloppy - handling wise, yeah, I know. Okay, I guess I'll stick with the stock size of 235/45/17.

big sky answered the question of thicker sidewall....
235/45/ to 245/45 will not change the sidewall size too much...it will only make the tire a little more wide and i believe jm530 wants to know if this will make handling better or worse...i too want to know if this is good or bad..

In the same tire, the 245 will have more grip, but will you use all that grip day-to-day? Probably not. Going from a great 235 summer tire to a 245 all season, you will probably loose some feel and ultimate grip.

Not sure how better to answer your question.

Going to a 245/35 increase the overall height of the tire ~ .3"

It all boils down to the tire as far as performance, as waktazz says given the same tire- a wider tire (more contact patch) will generally be more advantageous

You need to consider tire height in the equation too- it effects overall "gearing"- STi guys often run a tad higher tire say for autox do the short gearing, WRX guys often run a shorter tire for the opposite effect

a hi po tire vs all season tire (even if the all season happened to be wider) is a no brainer- the hi po tire will out perform the all season all day long (unless you get out of the operating environ of the hi po tire)

Thanks guys, and thank you Bigsky. I already understand that all seasons perf tire is not going to handle/perform as well as a summer hi perf tire. My question/purpose of the thread is ride quality - as in, feeling bumps, etc. - not handling or performance - i already know that it is less than a summer perf tire. Anyhoo, i just ordered all seasons in the stock size of 235s.
