Uncomfortable seats in Subaru Legacy Wagon (Outback)
Hi - Just posting a question for you Legacy/Legacy Outback owners - My father loves his Legacy wagon - has over 120,000 since 1997 when he bought it new. He just recently got the springs/struts replaced, and new brakes - first "scheduled" maintenance yet, so he's very pleased with the car, but mentioned the seats had lost their "comfort." Just got back from a trip from Philadelphia to Canada, and noticed the seats just aren't comfortable anymore.
Any suggestions on replacements? I dunno if "replacement seats" is the answer, or seat covers? I know about leatherseats.com and katzkin kits, but he doesn't want leather. Basically, just something that could replace the padding/cushion or something. Thanks all

Replacement seat covers wouldn't do anything to affect comfort, but they sure would look nice.
Why not swap in a set of WRX seats? That is, if he doesn't mind the mismatched upholstery. |

the katzkin leather seats have more padding. I've got 'em and they are more comfy.

I vouch for that - I too have the katzkin leather seats for my WRX and they ARE more comfy. Not to mention the fact that they smell nice, have seat heaters (ok, I installed seat heaters...) and look friggin awesome!!
The way I see it, even to "restuff" the seats, it requires taking the seat covers off anyway, and recovering with the old shiznit just plain sucks IMO. |

if he does that much driving, a good supporting seat like a sparco, recaro, or whatever fits him best might be the call.
otherwise, seats from an rs or impreza wrx should bolt right up. another option would be to find an auto upholsterer and see what they could do regarding padding and stuff. |

hmm .... seat fit is often an individual choice .... have him sit in an '02 or '03 wrx and if he likes that seat ... start looking on the forum as the last time I looked they were priced around 300 ...
I love mine in my 97 legacy gt! Charlie |

I HATE the OEM leather seats in my GT Limited. In addition to being slippery, they feel like they were designed for someone 5'6" tall.
I am told that the WRX seats, while very comfortable, really cut down on usable headroom. and that getting an adapter for an aftermarket seat will also raise the seat somewhat as well. With the moon roof, I find that I really have very limited headroom in my Legacy. What are the pre-2001 imprezza RS seats like ? |

Jonathan,
If you're not over 5'10" ... wrx seats will work for you ... Charlie |

Thanks for the advice, Charlie. Has anyone tried the seats from the Old School RS model in a Legacy ? |

Now here's a few more issues to throw into the mix (gotta make it more complicated, right?!)
If one DOES do the swap, of course, the colors of the fabric will be way off - not too big of a deal. But where would one look for the seats to begin with? You said they can be had for ~300.00 - suggestions on where to find? People who are getting racing seats, perhaps? Second, the car has the Subaru factory heated seats - I do NOT know how the heater elements are integrated into this seat, but I assume they could be removed and somehow retrofitted to the new seats (would obviously require removing the fabric) thanks for all the great suggestions so far!
