Default Rumormill: GMC brand getting the axe?

Quote:
This has been a big year for GM's organization alignment, with President Fritz Henderson opening up about the brand issue snafu and the appointment of four brand czars. HUMMER was meant to join forces with Cadillac and Saab in a premium channel, but while HUMMER is still in the family, it's apparently been put out on the lawn. GM Inside News (GMI) reports that GM is treating HUMMER as a goner, saying that the H4 program is on life support for handover to the next buyer, and the H3 GMT-700 program is kaput.

The bigger hearsay is that GM's board is considering euthanizing GMC or Pontiac. Those two brands were to be aligned in a brand channel with Buick (PBG). Getting rid of GMC could make some kind of sense, since it's entirely brand-engineered vehicles with some of the worst mileage numbers in the fleet. Shunning Pontiac would be a surprise to us since the Solstice and G8 have given it a nice brand awareness boost and it's got some products in the pipeline. If GMC or Pontiac did go, the GM board would consider folding Saturn into the PBG channel to maintain sales volume. In corporate-speak, we believe this is called GM's "gloves off" phase. Thanks for the tip, Dan!

They've been saying this crap for years. Pontiac was supposed to get killed 10 years ago. Still beating ...

GMC getting killed? Doubtful.

Seems kind of foolish but understandable I suppose. I'd just merge Hummer and GMC and make it equivalent to Jeep.

Makes no sense in keeping GMC alive since all their vehicles are just badge-jobs.... BUT until recently the sales for that division were actually pretty good. GM just has to figure out that if they killed off the Sierra or Denali, would people instead buy their Chevy equivalent?

It's almost pointless in keeping them alive, yet at the same time almost pointless in killing them off too.

I personally hope they do no kill off Pontiac... With cars like the Solstice and G8, it's a division that holds much potential in my opinion... as long as they continue to be given good product to sell.

With Saturn already having the Sky, all they would really need to do is have a Saturn version of the G8...

well GMC trucks did have differences in appearance to their Chev counterpart. I don't pay to much attention to current models to know if thats true now or now. But I know when I worked for a Pontiac/GMC/Buick dealership, we had loyal GMC truck owners who didn't like Chev... go figure? its the same underneith. Like Vibe and Matrix.

I think the Acadia is one of their most distinctive and attractive SUVs on the road.

They don't like the chevy version because chevy as seen as "lower class". This was the reason for GMC to exist in the first place.

However, if GM was smart they'd axe GMC because they are just badge jobs, and roll the model lines into their chevy equivelents as trim levels. This way you can still get your Denali, it's just a Chevy Suburban/Tahoe Denali, not a GMC Yukon. This reduces advertising costs, engineering costs, production costs, and general overhead. Of all of GM's brands, GMC has the least reason to live because it is ENTERLY made up of re-badged Chevy trucks. All of GM's other brands may have badge jobs, but at least have one or two unique cars.

I feel that Pontiac would be the last of GM's brands (besides Chevy and Cadillac of course) to get the axe because it is very successfully introducing Holden's cars over here. For those that don't know, the G8 is the Holden Commador, the GTO is the Monaro, and they're also brining the Holden Vee Ute over here, but I don't remember what it's Pontiac name is. These are all completely unqiue cars, not badge shared with any other brand (except Holden of course). Since all of these cars have been selling very well, it would be foolish of GM to kill the brand because it doesn't save them nearly as much as killing a badge job brand like GMC would.

GMC's trucks (with the exception of the new Yukon) look better than all of their counterparts. If GMC was axed (an easy move), other brands might take their styling. Like how the Grand Am turned into the Alero after Olds was discontinued.

Pontiac is starting to make a comeback. But the G8 could easily be rebadged as the Impala or possibly a new saturn. The Solstice already has the Sky counterpart. The G5 can easily be axed. The G6 already has a Saturn clone and could get a slight change to be a Buick. The torrent... well the pontiac badges would stop production.
And the Grand Prix.... the dam thing just needs to die already.

Which is why Pontiac NA is still selling the GTO, right?

They're not selling the GTO because even GM admitted they screwed up. I believe they've taken cautionary measures... The G8, as of now, is still selling.

OK, I agree. But going back to what I quoted, how is that "very successfully introducing Holden's cars over here"? I don't think the G8 will last with the gubernment introducing minimum MPGs and the overall push for smaller, more fuel efficient cars. The G8 came at the wrong time. That's not say it gets terrible gas mileage because it doesn't. But it's becoming harder to justify driving around a big fuel thirsty V8 these days considering the alternatives on the market right now.

^ I don't disagree... but no one expected such price increase in such a short period of time.
