Default 2016 WRX TOB replacement

So I took my WRX to the only nearby Subaru dealership and they replaced my TOB and clutch pedal assembly under warranty even though I am past the three year mark, but only have 18k miles. They allowed me a good faith repair.

The service department said it would take about a day to fix, and gave me a loaner to drive. This was on Wednesday of last week. Around Saturday I called to inquire about my car and was told that they were busy and would call me back. This was around noon, and at 5pm I had heard nothing. So I called back and forgetting it was a Saturday, they had already closed.

I called again today and was told that they were checking the alignment and that as soon as they were done they would call me back. I was thinking I guess they have to check the alignment because of having to remove the tranny and that could cause some issues. They finally called about 2:30 today saying it was ready to pick up. The first thing I notice is that the steering is tight as all get out. In my mind I was thinking well the Impreza was pretty sensitive so I guess it was just from driving that car for a few days. Regardless, I mentioned it and they said they loosened up the steering column. And to try it again, it was still a little tight and I could feel it but again I thought it must be in my head. So I left and about when I hit 2.5 to 3k rpms, I hear this ticking noise coming from the driver's side. Almost like a fan motor with a bad bearing. Below that it sounded normal.

So, I took it back and told the technician and he said it could be some plastic or something rubbing so he took it back to check it out. Then after about 30 minutes he brought it back and said they couldn't find anything wrong. So I took him down the road with me and he could hear the noise and he took it back into the service area and they put it up on the lift. They again said they couldn't see an issue. So I took him for another ride and he confirmed that it was still happening. And again he took it back to the service area and I went back up to the main waiting area. About an hour later, I decided to go back to the area to check and see what was up. He had the downpipe off and was saying that a bolt was loose and it was causing the gasket to rattle.

Around this time it was about 5:15pm and it was getting close to closing time at the dealership. He said he was almost finished and it wouldn't take much longer. Finally he got the downpipe back on and sure enough the sound was still present, so he seemed to not know what to do at this point. He started looking for TSBs that would relate to the issue. So he told me to drive it and see if it was the TOB needing to wear-in. At this point I am not sure what to do.

My car did have the TOB squeal but it didn't make the engine noise before hand, and the steering feels all wonky now. I am at a loss at what to do. Especially since this is the only Subaru dealership nearby. Any suggestions?

TLR Subaru dealership "fixed" my TOB and replaced my clutch pedal assembly, engine now makes a noise at 2.5 -3k rpm and steering is tight and wonky.

If this isn't the correct forum I apologize.

That's what you get for having the tob replaced for making a little noise which has been deemed "normal" for these cars. Should of left it alone.

My advice, either find another dealership or locate a reputable Subaru shop and have them fix the problem.

I can't think of a reason for an alignment after doing a ToB, clutch, trans pull/replace, engine pull/replace, etc.

Depending on how you go about popping the axles out, I guess you could need to fine tune it.

But yeah...

So basically you are saying to expect ****ty quality from Subaru. Makes me feel confident I chose the brand. I should expect rattles, and terrible fit and finish and just be happy it has a Subaru badge on it. And on top of that you are saying that I should also expect the dealership to have incompetent technicians. Well if that is the case, then this is my first and last Subaru. My wife had a Forrester and the transmission went out. I guess that is normal too.

I don't think it is normal to expect a high pitch squealing noise from a car with 15k miles on it. I never had a Honda do this, or Mazda, or Toyota.

Lol calm down there cowboy. I was referring mainly to the faint noise that most tob have, especially when raining. High pitched squeal I would of brought it in. I've been on this forum for 12 years now and have read way too many horror stories about dealerships.

Subarus are good quality. This is my 4th wrx and I plan on owning more but you do get the occasional bad apple. Dont let that spoil the bunch.

Something sounds fishy with the dealer and their service. That's all.

Sorry about that, but yeah the dealership here sucks. I am kicking myself for taking it in at this point. The new noise wouldn't be so terrible if the steering wasn't so messed up. I have no idea why they messed with that anyway. I always take good car of my cars and I just hate that the car I have now is not the car I took in to have the TOB updated. I have called the dealership again today but of course they won't return my calls.

Time to find a new dealer, not a new brand.

^^^I'd go with this as well. I just had my TOB, clutch, pedal assembly, etc. replaced under warranty because my TOB sounded horrible as well. Zero issues to report and no more squeal. I'd probably have a nice relaxed talk with the manager of the service department first and see how he/she handles your concerns. If you feel the manager sucks after your interaction then just move on. Usually ****e service departments are the result of ****e management, but until you find out maybe it's just one or two bad employees who haven't been there long enough to get worked out of the system.

The noise is more often than not loud and obnoxious, and frequently happens continuously until you depress the clutch. Hardly a "little noise". Had mine done a year ago and not a squeak since. I'm not going to buy a new car and put up with faults in case the dealership mechanics are crap- I think you'll find most people in non-forum settings feel the same.

Fill out your profile so we can see where you are, and possibly direct you to some subie specialists too.

I updated my profile, I live in Columbia, SC btw. I took my car back to the dealership and let the service manager hear it. He confirmed that it was making a noise, he also drove it and confirmed that the steering was terrible. This was the day after Thanksgiving and I dropped it off for them to look at it. I finally get a call back today saying that the steering is broken and that I will have to pay $1800 to get it fixed. So basically they broke my steering and want me to fix it.

They also said there was a TSB on the turbo that needed to be done and that the battery was bad.

My car has 18,000 miles on it, and I got it right over three years ago, so they are saying that I will have to pay since it is out of warranty or I will have to call Subie of America.

I had contacted Subaru of AMerica before this all happened and had already opened a case with them.

However, I do not want this dealership to touch my car anymore. It is apparent they are incompetent, and the closest dealership besides this one is in Augusta, GA.

I am so livid at this point, I took my car in for the TOB to be fixed and they have completely wrecked my car. This is a nightmare!

Also, I cannot find a TSB for the turbo in a 2016 WRX, so I think they are full of crap on that too.

I've had mine replaced twice on my 2015 WRX. I got about 4 months out of the first one when I needed a new clutch and also started hearing the TOB again. When I had an Independent Subaru Shop do it the 2nd time, I had them just replace the oversize bearing itself while doing the clutch and flywheel. Since I had the new clutch and flywheel and new oversize bearing in, I haven't had the issue return. Personally, I avoid the dealership at all costs. Look for an Independent Subaru Specialist in your area if you want someone that truly cares about these cars.

Really hoping SoA does you a solid and has the necessary repairs done under warranty and with apologies. I'd be absolutely livid at the dealership and considering legal action if I was in your shoes (then again, I married an attorney who knows about how to go about doing that kind of stuff and who to look for/talk to, so risk of sinking money into a lawyer when it's a waste of time and money is minimized in my case).

That's how I currently feel about my Subaru and being on these forums lol.

My WRX is going to be my first, last and only Subaru. You are lucky yours made it to 15K before making the noise, mine started it one month into ownership, maybe 1K kms? Make a noise like slipping fan belt at lower volume randomly after it was left sitting for a while. I'm on my 3rd TOB (factory one included). Luckily it's all noise free, but will see if the redesigned part is an improvement.

Maybe it was the recall for the Turbo Inlet Duct and not a TSB? Had it replaced on mine.

Update to the story is that I got in touch with SoA, thank goodness I opened up a case with them the day I got my car back. They are going to fix the steering at no charge to me. And the recall is on the turbo inlet duct. They want $200.00 for a new battery. But I will just get a Deka or something like that for around $150.

Hopefully they can fix it correctly, if not the saga will continue. They say it should take about 10 -12 days to get it fixed. I had to beg for a loaner car, but was able to get one.

The only independent Subaru repair shops around here, also fix Honda, Toyota, etc. And I am not familiar with them.
