My 2002 WRX had a center diff failure.
Wasn't the clip, though... The entire center diff unit welded itself up. Possibly caused by a failed axle. Or, more likely, going 70 MPH on the beach, in the sand. Sideways. |

Mine bit the bullet last summer too in my 02 WRX 5 speed. I noticed the C-clip replacement too. The circlip on my old center diff was fully in tack and installed though.

Wanted to bring this thread back instead of starting a new one because I am in the same predicament and started searching for a replacement retaining clip when I stumbled on this thread. Great information on here, though no solution has been posted...yet.
I was working on getting the four bearings replaced in the rear transfer case because I had the symptoms of the diff bearing going bad. Long story short, once I popped the cover off the cir-clip just came right out. I didn't drive too far when I started hearing the whining noise from the transmission, and I didn't see any visible damage within the diff when I took it out. Just a couple of edges missing on a couple of teeth on the transfer gear and drive, which I believe my aftermarket drain plug captured most of it. Hoping it didn't do more damage that I can't see going through the transmission. Anyways, I didn't want to cough up $500 on a new diff since I don't plan on keeping the 5 spd longer than I have to. But I do want to get her back on the road asap. So I ordered the retaining ring below from McMaster to try it out. It's the closest one I could find, without needing to order bulk. If it doesn't work, then its only $5. 99142A680 Internal Retaining Ring for 4" ID, Black-Phosphate 1060-1090 Spring Steel, packs of 1 Has anybody figured out a sure solution to this? |
