And here's the Car and Driver article Torque News is reporting on:

Details Surface: Chrysler Readying SRT Barracuda to Succeed Challenger

Quote:
Not much about the 2013 Viper deviates from the formula that made the car famous—it has a monstrous V-10, rear-wheel drive, and a manual transmission, and it still looks ready for a 10-on-1 bar fight. Branding it not a Dodge but an SRT, however, has raised eyebrows. Giving that new brand heft is a *second model: the 2015 SRT Barracuda, the Dodge Challenger’s replacement.

Unlike the Viper, it will be a dramatic departure. Chrysler’s LX platform (Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum and Charger) benefited from front and rear *suspension setups derived from the Mercedes-Benz S- and E-class, respectively, but it’s huge for a pony car. Since the Challenger’s inception, the LX has evolved into the LY and gained weight in the process. Now that it’s part of Fiat, Dodge would like to export Challengers, but their mass and zaftig proportions limit overseas sales potential. With fuel economy a growing *priority—not to mention four-cylinder versions of both the Mustang and Camaro on the horizon—Chrysler needed to slim down its offering. Fortunately, Fiat has been on the prowl for a rear-drive platform for use by Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and possibly Maserati. These factors motivated Chrysler to develop a new platform, and the Barracuda will be its first fruit.

Similar in size to the current Mustang, the Barracuda is expected to lose more than six inches from the Challenger’s wheelbase and close to eight in overall length. Rear track and overall width are forecast to shrink by a bit more than two inches. Weight will drop by between 250 and 300 pounds. The front suspension may move from control arms to a strut setup; the rear suspension will remain multilink, with new geometry.

Mindful of tightening CAFE requirements, power*train offerings will expand to include at least one *variant of the new 2.4-liter Tigershark inline-four, possibly force-fed. While the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 is expected to get direct injection at about the time the ’Cuda arrives, CAFE more than market demand will determine whether a V-6 is offered. Expect the Hemi V-8 to carry on, with direct injection increasing power and efficiency. We hear it’s unlikely that both the 5.7- and 6.4-liter versions will be offered but hope Chrysler reverses its thinking there. Two Hemis would go a long way toward cementing the SRT brand’s authenticity.

As long as you can live with a HEMI V6, otherwise you will probably have to settle for 24's

Hey, ease up on them, it took a lot to come up with the 100, 200, and 300. Theyre all tuckered out.

The number names are retreads too

And, "up to" 300 lbs lighter? That doesn't seem that much considering the shrinkage in dimensions and a possibly smaller motor. But I could be wrong

I'm guessing we won't be seeing Aspen and Volare come back, much less... Cordoba.

I wonder how much worse Chrysler's reliability will get using all of these Alfa models.

Fiat understands "Add lightness". Let's hope it boils down to the Cuda and the car comes in with the same kind of capabilities, if not better, than the Mustang, and lighter.

That would be really nice. Yet, it's an uphill climb and I doubt Ford is shaking in their Shaker Hoods.

http://www.caranddriver.com/features...da-future-cars

If it shrinks as much or more than Car&Driver is rumoring, and looks anything like that rendering, it will be much more compelling than the elephant that is Challenger.

Camaro is rumored to be departing from the Zeta platform, and possibly moving to a modified version of the Alpha platform that underpins the Caddy ATS, and similarly shrinking in size and weight.

Mustang for 2015 is rumored to lose bulk and weight as well.

All good news, as far as I am concerned.

Now if someone would just put out a competitor to those that has AWD, a 100hp/liter H6, and a manual or automated-clutch gearbox choice...

Smaller Camaro, smaller Mustang, smaller Cuda...Kind of throws them a little "closer" to being in direct competition with the BRZ. Only saying this because so many compared the BRZ , at its release, to the Mustang. Now if they are closer in size and have more power and handle better than their predecessors, I can see a reason to cross shop.

I would say they're aiming more for a Genesis Coupe size; the BRZ is pretty damn small. One of these 3 will be my next car; it's going to come down to who can throw together the best package in terms of looks/power/efficiency/price since I'm not brand loyal to any of them.

As for the Demon, this is what you're referring to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Demon_Concept
I would love that car if it came with the SRT4 motor.

You can buy two, or maybe even three of the pony/muscle cars for one Porsche 911 Carrera 4. base to base, or high-option to high-option, or Boss/Shelby/ZL1/SRT high-powered line to 911 Turbo.

So it can be brief. just simply: 'too expensive'. Or 'not affordable' if you prefer.

I always get this gut feeling that you do a ton of research on vehicles from journals, magazines, and the Internet, compile the information, memorize drivetrains of various models/makes from every manufacturer out there...

... just so you can say that in every thread you post in.

Agreed with everything else you said for the most part, however.

More compelling to you, you mean. My dad bought a Challenger last year based upon the fact that an adult could actually sit behind another in the car for longer than 5 minutes and still be comfortable. We tried the Mustang, Genesis Coupe and the Camaro, and none of them had that same capability. Different strokes for different folks, man.

That's because the Challenger is based off a Mercedes E-class chassis. And also why it can't keep up with the Mustang/Camaro in any of the performance comparisons; AND it costs $10K more for the top model. Best looking of the three for sure, but when it comes to the ultimate package of looks/performance/value, it's last.

I was referring to your wish if a smaller H6 AWD with a manual dream machine.

It exists. You just cannot afford it.

Oh there's no doubt that it's dead last in the triple comparison. However, is that necessarily a bad thing? I'm not entirely sure. Like I said, different strokes for different folks.

And if I had to ride in any of them for an extended period, I think I'd take the Challenger.

Considering it sells the worst of the 3, probably. They really needed to either make the interior a lot nicer and make it a GT car to compete with the CTS coupe or trim it down to make it compete with the Camaro/Mustang. Being a 'tweener wasn't working all that great for them.

That was the car...or something similar. Just read somethin recently about the fact Chrysler/Fiat was still kicking the idea around. I agree that those cars will be more the size of the Genesis coupe. A lot of folks cross shopped the BRZ and Genesis. Now they may have three more to consider. have

I like their idea. Instead of a new Challenger every cycle, just release another retro.
