You NEED a 7 tooth cam gear. I.e. the older DOHC style and NOT the 7 tooth 90-94 SOHC gear. The WRX cam gear will NOT work with your ECU/sensor (unless its an early 7 tooth).
Did you replace the water pump? The timing belt? check the timing belt idlers? That **** is usually done for on these used engines. |

yup the 2002 wrx will work??
just picked up the 2002 wrx LH EXAUST cam gear it was almost exacly the same as the EJ20G's exept the bolt holder for holding the com gear in place is star shaped as the G's was hex shaped!! and the G's had a little press in stud tha fit into the cam while the WRX's needs the woodruff key!! it should fit right in the cam!! the teeth and gear markings are identical but tomorrow I got's to do the timing! I checked the play on all the tensioners they were good also the EJ22T"s were all new so ifany probs I'll just but them in cause there exacally the same the water pump look's good. the 22's is the same too!! .the hydrallic tensioner has a different # on it so I'm using the 20's one. (it's a little rustyer looking though) but it should be fine new belt and keys new seals all round .
Tomorrow I got to hook it all up I have to change the engine harness to reach all the sensors and injectors, coolant temps, I,C,V, oilpress,e.t.c. all are the same conectors but in different locations throught the engine so's I gotta make some shorter some longer with the JDM harness!! Do you guys think the EJ22T's ECU run the 20G okay .I"M going to get a manual boost controller to control the bigger turbo. will that work do you think??? I think the 22's controls should be close cause it's turbo too!! the fuel pump and stuff shouldbe the same or close cause the GT's and RS's were both built in Japan. american cars probly run richer compared to HP than the Japs do cause they squeze mor out of smaller and want good economy! Anyways the coolant resivivour for the 20G is on the right front side of the motor the 22's was on the left rear and is too tall for the right front and the G's is all bustedso I gotta make somtin work untill I get the right one1 so any help is greatly apps thanx Jesse |

the wrx"s cam gear didn't fit to well but I made a custom key and wrapped the cam in tape so the gear fit more snug like the old one I woulda found an old one round here or somewere but it's outta the shop after tomorrow so had to make do.
man timing is a bitch to do on this engine those short little cams sure move tooo easy when there loaded but hopfully ti's good now(after only like 6-8 tries) the one in my 4A-GE corolla was way easier to do even if the space was like 20 times smaller!! wires tomorrow finish hookups and check timing after running if it in fact runs (hope so) if anyone has any tricks to tell please let me know thanx |

it can be done!!
I got it to start today but the wrx cam gear kinda was bumpy so I filed the rough part on the old cam gear guide that was cracked off and used that . the wrx one worked but not to good so ( DON'T USE ONE CAUSE IT MAY CAUSE PROBS) but it worked I was just un cofortable with it plus it was like $130 so I will get most that back??? but cam timing still off so I can't get it , we just cant get it perfect, tried like 6 more times but the best we got was LH ext cam 1 tooth advanced so startin it again then check it again, Doe's any one have any good info bout doing this cause when I pull the belt over the last idler it pulls the lef or right cams out together!!! so can anyone HELP ME
thanks jesse |

she drives now!! so I still need a TMIC to work good ,the getto set up I made by cutting up the ej22's intakepipe flipped upside down with some rad hoses with two 80 degree angles put together with a plumming coupler, and glued it to the inside of the intake pipe!! so I'm not going to be pushing too much boost untill I get an intercooler!
