Post anyone using 225.55.16's on a legacy GT

Hey folks,

I'm just about ready to spring for the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP's for my 97 GT .... and after looking at the tire width/cross section (overall width) and tread width's for the 225.55.16 versus the 205.55.16 ... 8.4 vs 9.2 inches .... and 6.5 vs 7.0 inches for the firestone's SZ50 EP... The overall circumference is 25.8 vs 24.9 ...

Do you think I'd have clearance problems after installing the DMS golds with the 225.55.16's ?

the 225's would provide a larger contact patch ...but probably a bit more float on dirt/gravel

... would be grateful for any feedback

If you want to keep stock diameters, run 225/50/16, for higher performance go with a 225/45/16 (better gearing etc).

I'm no tire expert, but if you had the DMS coilover setup, you prolly could set the ride height higher to prevent any rubbing issues. But at that higher height, you'll negate any performance benfit from the larger contact patch. Unless of course you're running on dirt (can't remember if this setup was for rally or not). Just a thought.

GTBGUY,

thanks ... the 225.50.16's have the same diameter ... 24.9 as the 205.55.16's ... with a 7 inch contact patch ... the 245's increase the contact patch to 7.5 and tire width to 10 inches ... 1.6 inches over 205.55.16 ... would this width present a problem ?

thanks

Charlie,

I just sent you a reply to your email, and then realized that you had said 225/55 vice 225/50. If you did go with 225/55s, the problems below would be amplified, as the tire is going to be about 0.4" closer to the fender lip (and hence closer to the spring perches). Anyway, here's what I had emailed you:

I think the 225s would be very tight in the rear (depending, of course, on how much negative camber you're running). I ordered the Golds with the 0.75deg camber washers, and just had the car up on the alignment rack yesterday evening for the first time since the coil-overs were installed. Rear camber was -1' 30" on one side and -1' 40" on the other side, which is about double that 0.75deg - I thought that was kind of strange.

I'm currently running 205/55-16 SZ50EPs, and I have ride height set about 1/2 - 5/8" lower than stock. At that height, and with all the negative camber I've got, the rear spring perches are getting pretty close to being a problem. The driver's side one is just barely above the top of the tire, and the passenger's side perch is about 1/2" higher. The perches will clear the tire if they are right next to it, but not by much - maybe 2 or 3mm. So, if you have ride height low enough, and you have enough negative camber, the 225s won't clear (in my opinion).

Pat,

thanks for your post and email ... I started off looking at the 255.55.16's ... but going with the 225.50's keeps the same overall diameter ... provides a larger tread patch .. 7.0 vs 6.5 and a larger crosssection 9.2 vs 8.4

I talked with Luke@tirerack yesterday ...and he was confident the 225.50.16's would not rub ... after reading your response ... I'm not so sure ... if you have any other thoughts I'd appreciate them ..

thanks

Charlie
