1986 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

Biggest POS ever.

Worst gearbox synchros EVER. Even after rebuild.

Went through $350 fuel pumps like they were oil filters.

Original and replacement tops leaked - into driver's lap on left turns; passenger's on right turns (only when it rained, though)

Heater blower motor would stop periodically - had to contort my arm & hand up under dash and "bump-start"

On "Hi" wipers were S-L-O-W which would invariably prompt passengers to ask " Why don't you turn the wipers to ***8216;Hi' so you can see?" On "Low" they might not have the momentum to complete a sweep.

Power windows were also tragically slow and the motors burned out frequently.

The top was ridiculously difficult to latch back into the "up" position. I think I still have the impressions from the buckles in my hands. If the temp was below 70 degrees you had no shot as the material would shrink. Better keep the top up.

Wind noise was absurd.

Mirror bodies rusted out.

The "wing window" latch constantly fell off. Eventually, I just left it off.
Held 7 quarts of oil (presumably because it would burn about half that every 3K miles. That was an expensive synthetic habit.

The hood would get random "Jiffy-Pop-Style" heat stress lumps that looked like you forgot a wrench on the engine and slammed the hood. Naturally, the paint would peel off these as well.

Oil sump hung @ 3" from the ground; very vulnerable (stock ride height).
Seat belt mechanism would lock up if you hit a bump or leaned forward at anything but slowest pace, effectively pinning you to seat. Coupled with the glove box door which would pop open and empty contents over every significant imperfection in the road, this may have been the source of greatest frustration.

Frame flexed like it was comprised exclusively of door hinges and silly putty.

Trunk rusted out so badly the spare hung out the bottom.

Despite constant TLC, the leather seats split all over.

The plastic snaps ($12 apiece) which held the tonneau cover over the retracted top would break in anything less than 90 degree weather. Often over 90 too. That was OK as the tonneau was about 2" too small anyway. Stretching that on was a nice warm-up for fastening the buckles when you put the top back up.

Tach generally worked; Speedo was very "approximate"; Odometer ceased to function at 40K.

Battery was in the trunk so the 90' of cables required to reach the starter created a nice drain which would kill the battery if not driven daily.

The Alfa Romeo badges were attractive***8230;.to thieves. The Pininfarina badges warped and stuck out from the body.

I won't even go into the self-inflicted issues like the autocross cams I installed or the aftermarket hard top***8230;

I could go on but it would use untold amounts of bandwidth.

Beautiful car, though.
Almost all things that could apply to my '79 Fiat Spider 2000. I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!

1985 Chevy Sprint, aka Suzuki Swift (I think that's what it was). Had it 1 year. It wasn't new when I bought it, but it was only a few years old.

The two main problems were leaking coolant into the oil, and the manual transmission "acting up". Not sure how to describe that problem, but it would sometimes not want to go into gear. I don't think it was the clutch because most of the time it worked okay. And when it did act up, it was like moving a stick around in mud.

I had a 2003 Lincoln LSV8. These are notorious for the valve cover gaskets leaking oil into the COP wells and fouling the coils. This car was constantly in the shop for failing coils and eventually I destroyed the catalytic converters because so much unspent fuel was just being dumped into them from the misfiring.

Ford put out a recall for 2003 only even though this affected numerous model years. THE BEST PART was that consumers and dealerships were sent two different letters regarding the recall. The dealer letter stated that only the affected COPs were to be replaced along with the valve cover gaskets. The consumer letter stated that all COPs were to be replaced as well as the valve cover gaskets.

The dealership fought me on it but after a few phone calls to Ford corporate, the dealership was more than happy to honor the actual letter sent to me, word for word.

I will say that it was one of the best all around cars I've owned. It had a 3.9L V8, RWD, Nav, Heated/Air Conditioned seats, and 50/50 weight distribution. It was faster and handled better than my WRX does but I couldn't deal with having a rental more than my actual car.

Nobody builds cars like the Italians.

I'm just not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing .

1990 Ford Probe GL... black with silver racing stripes and a big PROBE GL banner on the windshield... LOL! No I didnt put those there but when I was 16 I thought they were cool! That car was like its on fog machine everytime it started... just a curtain of black around it. Just about everything broke on it and I only had it for a month haha. Memories!

Wow, some very good ones here, I think 2 may have me beat!

First car, and maybe the worst, 1972 Volvo 144. I had it 3 months before 3 valves bent in the head, still ran, but got 8.5 MPG from a 2.2 4cyl. Car had original paint except for the hood and one fender, were repainted in the 89-90 years, so they had clear coat, while the rest of the car was oxidized. Had a blown am radio with 1 speaker, so I put in a cd player, 2 x 10's, and 2 3 way boxes in the back. On a trip I killed 2 plugs and the dist rotor, turns out that you can get a mid 70's vw rotor and rewire it to work for the volvo! between the 400$ stereo and 500$ rack for me and my buddies 2000$ plus bikes, it was great for high school, or 3 months of it.

Next car was a 400 dollar 1980 volvo 242 ( yes there is a trend, my dad worked on them) had that car for 3 years, more stereos, a new engine, 2 clutches, 4 sets of tires, H4 100 watt headlights, Volvo rally spec suspension(kicked ass), and frequently frying overdirve wiring.

After that, a 1979 Volvo wagon, perfect interior, nice, but crappy color, paint, swapped the suspension and exhaust from the sedan into it. Paid 550, sold it for 900. Still wish I kept this car, aside form 2 wiring issues I could have fixed, ikt was a cherry car.

Sold both of those Volvos for a 1985 VW scirocco. Still my fav car of all time, but it had issues! I went through 2 motors, 4 trans, 2 Zender lip kits (rare as hell) had custom door panels for mb quart 3 ways, full dynamat, would hit 148 db with 2x 12" and 2000 watts. flexed the body panels, and had shatterproof glass, or would have busted that as well. Also had full neuspeed engine setup, hit 156 in 5th gear topped, when that car maxed at 111 when new, kept even with my buddies 98 Acura type-R swapped 4 door to redline, then pulled a bit. Hit a pole, drove it in the mtns of Colorado for 2 years, pretty much killed the car. I still want another to redeem myself for how I killed that car.

Had another Volvo, 78 2 door, with an auto. Took about a min to hit 60, but ran smooth forever. I found Pot seeds and such in the glovebox, had fireworks let of in it while driving to the strip club, jumped it many many time, and got it impounded when I lost my license, still took the Optima and speakers and made money on the car.

Since I got my License back, I have had my Honda, which I love, My WRX, and...

1987 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0, manual 4x4. worst Jeep trans ever, and I put 35" mudders on the thing. Cut the fenders off with my sawzall, lifted it 2", spent about 300 on engine and sensors, it ran like a top. Killed 3 trans in 4 months. Had 2 seats, 2 fake windows since it had been rolled and the roof wasnt ever fixed, I had to put any gauge I wanted in aftermarket. Still sold it for more than I paid, and the tires as well!

I had a few, hope my stories arent too long!

1994 Camry LE..it was given to me so it was free...drove it into the ground for 8 years and got 218,000 miles out of it. 2 of the power window motors broke wich I replaced , replaced the radiator, many spark plug changes wich were a bitch since the rear 3 plugs were UNDER the intake manifold plenum...the front 3 took 15 minutes the rear 3.. 45!

I got T-boned in the right rear door, bought another same color at a pick in pull but the passenger door needed a shoulder slam to open from the inside, I think the frame was bent from the impact. Power steering fluid leaked and I never bothered fixing it. When the weather started getting cold it didnt have any power steering for a few minutes, exaust leak repairs were a yearly requirement, I replaced the balljoints tie rod ends and all the struts and mounts at 200,000 miles and it rode like a new car...but it was horrible in the snow and rain..that car did save me a TON of money though...8 years of no car payment has its advantages. Had the same tail light out warning light on the dash even when the bulbs all worked. Combination switch on the steering column failed and cost 350 from the dealer. Valve covers leaked like crazy due to the angle of the heads on the block, I replaced the front gasket but again the rear bank on these V6's is a joke to get at, didnt bother. Didnt even have antilock brakes. The transmission WAS bullet proof I'll give it that, never changed the fluid and it never gave me problems.

i've only had 2 other cars before i had my sti...first car was a 2000 sunfire..sold it towards an 07 vibe..nothing wrong with either of them..then got the sti a few weeks ago..so i guess i never had a crappy car in the breaking down aspect as alot of you have posted..but i'd say the sunfire was the worst of the 2 since it had a gutless engine and was auto..and well..a sunfire..enough said..

I may have missed it, but I can't believe Merkur hasn't been mentioned. Maybe some of you were smart enough not to get one. I mean German engineering, but built to Ford standards, what could go wrong? Still have a place in my heart for them, and one day will have my Cosworth Sierra RS500 clone, but not at the moment.

I had a rusted to hell Civic for a short time, bought it for $100, drove it twice, sold it to someone for $100.

It had one working brake on the whole car, the left front. It had a whopping 76hp and had hood pins to keep the hood closed after the latch broke when it looks like someone lost a barfight on the hood. To think that I thought it would be an awesome project car -- I can't believe I was that stupid looking back.

Funny, I was just coming on here to post my 2002 GTI 1.8T as the crappiest car I've owned. Here's my list from 4 years of ownership (bought new, BTW):

Coilpacks
Windows falling
electrical problems (headlight switch, dash lights, brake lights...to name a few)
CELS all the time
Went through @ 5 oil pressure sensors
Went through a couple MAF sensors and a couple O2 sensors

All this happened within 85K well maintained miles! Was fun when it worked though.

Other than that, I've had a 94 civic (150K miles), 96 maxima (135K miles) and now my WRX (20K miles). The VW was the only car that had non-wear repairs.

1988 Toyota Camry with 225,000 miles.

It leaked oil, power steering, clutch, and brake fluids. It burned oil horribly and always had a fine blue mist from the tailpipe. Some mornings I'd go to start it and it would instantly stall. Further investigation revealed the clutch fluid was completely empty after a week and the floating air stopper was at the bottom of the reservoir. Like clockwork ps pump would squeal and I knew the beast was thirsty for it's weekly feeding.

Brakes were shot and all 4 shocks were completely seized. The windshield cracked one winter on the highway similar to the submersible in that movie The Abyss.

The driver headlight would stop working sometimes. I would have to get out and crack the hood with my elbow like the Fonze starting up a jukebox.

One day the rear driver door handle broke. Then the child proof system failed and the door could not be opened from the inside or outside.

This was my car during my college fraternity days to naturally we covered the tires in dishsoap and bleach and did 6k RPM clutch dumps in the parking lot at 4 AM. They stayed bald from that point on.

My parents gave it to a guy that just got out of prison. He drove it to his job until he tried to rob a store and went back to prison. It's fate is now undetermined...

I had a '78 Dodge Colt which was actually a rebadged Mitsu Lancer! 4 banger with a 4spd that made about 50hp. Previous owner roller painted it with brown tremclad. The thing literally rotted from the inside! I welded the diff up in shop class which made it pretty awesome in canadian winters. I'll find some pics and post them...

For me, its a toughy.. My first car was a 74 triumph spitfire, fun little **** for 500miles until you have to rebuid the motor lol there was always something wrong with it, there was not a single thing that worked on it besides one of the headlights and the tail lights, reverse never worked. Finally there was a really bad oil leak, and she blew.. Swapped it for a 350, that was scary as hell lol.. Then there was the 1992 buick le sabre. IMO the worst motors GM has ever made, everything leaked and rattled like crazy, not even 1000K and there was a major short that basically killed the car, traded it for a beat up 79 firebird. The guy I sold it to never got it running again, after replacing the wire harness and ecu
