Tell me what happened to my A/C...I'll tell you what I ate for breakfast
That's the rules.
Scenario: I come home the other day to find that it is 85 degrees (F for those of you that will be dumbasses) and wonder WTH? A/C won't turn on, fan won't kick on...etc. Upstairs separate unit works great. This has happened before so I went outside to see if the condenser had ice on it...nope. I go upstairs into the attic and the a/c has a big puddle of stagnant water in the overflow reservoir. I pull open the cover and the thing immediately kicks on and has been running ever since. So, what gives? What happened to my A/C?

There's a loose wire and pulling on the cover wiggled it back into place. For now.

Sounds like you shouldn't close that cover.

If your unit ~ my unit then your primary drain line might be clogged. As to why it started and has been running since, got no ideas. Mine has a pressure switch that shuts the thing off if you open it while running...not sure why yours would do the reverse. |

Was the float switch turning off the A/C because of the pool of water, acting as it should? Did pulling the cover remove some of the water some how? Ya got a plug in the drain tube?

you can get 'pan tabs' (basically chlorine tablets) that will help with unclogging primary and emergency drains on the unit. I try to throw a couple in at least once or twice a year.
You might have a service guy check the unit for low refrigerent. It may be icing up, shutting down due to some fancy sensor, melting off - but not restarting for some reason. |

If it is the type that has the slinger ring around the fan, the water may have caused it to trip an overload sensor.
This is a window unit, right? Is it pitched back at a small angle? Most of them don't have a drain hole now - they use the water to help cool the evaporator, slung on by the fan. Never seen one with a switch on the cover, but I don't get out much anymore [was an A/C mechanic in college]. |
